Taking Care Of Business

Posted on August 10, 2016 Written by Tonya

It’s a leap of fate starting a business, there is also a very, very steep learning curve and things pop up almost daily that you never thought would. Decisions to be made, records to keep, documents to create, meetings, brainstorming sessions, strategy, and expenses. So. many. expenses. But here we are,  Take Flight Social Media Consulting is almost 6 months old!!

We had a business plan by mid-February, took on our first client March 1, filed for an LLC March 22, launched our website April 5 and became “Facebook official” April 7.

We have worked with 11 clients to date and currently have eight on our roster.

I learn something new almost every day and thrive from trying to balance all my different roles. It’s definitely a juggling act. I misstep on occasion, but today, all the balls are in the air.

Things I didn’t know I’d love about having my own business. Also known as, things I’ll never take for granted:

  • Choosing an awesome business partner, who shares your vision, work ethic and is always a friend first. I’m so glad we are in this together, Nichole!
  • Reliable Wi-Fi. Duh.
  • Excepting help when offered and knowing when to ask for it.
  • Supportive husbands and families.
  • All. the. caffeine.
  • Dry shampoo.
  • Voxer.
  • Amazing friends who send business our way and cheer us on because they genuinely want us to be successful.
  • Clients that let us do you what we’ve promised.
  • Asking for what we’re worth!!
  • Taking on the risk and reaping the rewards.
  • Slowly paying off our investor.
  • Karma.
  • Sundays. Sundays are sacred. Sundays are for family.

Things I’ve done while owning my own business that I’m not so proud of:

  • Held conference calls in the car, bathroom (with the mute button on, of course!), grocery store, car pool, parking lots, my closet, dressing rooms, etc.
  • Produced eight pens from my purse at any given time.
  • Gone through the Starbucks drive-thru just so I can respond to an email.
  • Been in jammies and not brushed my teeth until way past noon.
  • Let my children watch way too much TV on the days they are both home with me. Mommy guilt, much?
  • Manically checked and rechecked my phone and email for likes, engagements, notes from clients or potential clients after having delivered a killer proposal.
  • Told a client I didn’t care for their product. Gulp. They took it pretty well, considering.

The list of things I’ve done that I am proud of far exceeds the above list. I never thought I’d be here at all, but it has been an amazing ride and I have enjoyed every minute. I love what I do, who I do it with and I’m eager to see where the next six months take us!

Things I Did While I Was 40 – Update

Posted on June 25, 2013 Written by Tonya

A year ago today, I shared a list of things I wanted to accomplish while I was 40. On the eve of my 41st birthday, I thought I would reflect and update.

The items that are crossed off I made happen with enthusiasm and I’m not going to beat myself up about the other stuff.

I’m a work in progress!

  1. Watch all 550 minutes of The Planet Earth DVDs.
  2. Run at least four 5Ks.
  3. Sell my parents house in Arizona. Yay!!
  4. Find a new house here, buy it and move in.
  5. If we aren’t going to move, finish decorating our living room.
  6. Raise a puppy. More on this later.
  7. Have a baby or at least get and stay pregnant by June, 2013. I am SO ready to get off this roller coaster.
  8. Read one book (at the very least) per month. Barely!
  9. Stop letting so many phone calls go directly to voice mail. I think I’m getting better at this.
  10. Successfully potty train my son. It’s time, yo!
  11. Finish writing my father’s story. You can read it here.
  12. Go easier on myself. In general. In all matters of my life. This is an ongoing struggle…
  13. Resume my yoga practice.
  14. Walk the 1000 steps in Laguna Beach. This morning!! Twice! With the dog.
  15. Purge my stuff. Meh.
  16. Have an epic garage sale. See above.
  17. Drink more champagne.
  18. Take Lucas to the beach by myself. Just once.
  19. Schedule more one on one time with my sister.
  20. Take Lucas on the Radiator Springs Racers at Cars Land just as soon as he grows one inch taller. 🙂
  21. Eat more salads than sandwiches. At home.
  22. Spend less time blogging, tweeting, status updating, pinning and playing games. For reals! Hanging my head in shame.
  23. If I have to be on Pinterest, start trying some of the shit I pin. I have a entire board dedicated to Pinterest projects I’ve tried!
  24. Meet more local bloggers in person.
  25. Make out with my husband more.
  26. Reach out to my family across the country more often.
  27. Lower expectations across the board.
  28. Cook more. I was on a roll for a while and then got lazy.
  29. Try new restaurants… Pizza Ortica, Chow, The Deck, Rooftop, etc.
  30. When eating out at the same old places, try something different on the menu for a change. I’m a creature of habit, what can I say?
  31. Never lie about my age.
  32. Give paddle boarding a whirl. I have been once and I am going again on my birthday!
  33. Go camping.
  34. Consider hiring a trainer.
  35. When moisturizing, never forget my neck!
  36. Mail medical insurance claims before my husband has a cow.
  37. Volunteer in Lucas’ classroom.
  38. Leave the phone in the car and really BE in the moment.
  39. Spend more time outdoors.
  40. Stop making lists! Not going to happen!!

Am I the only one that makes these kinds of crazy lists or do you too make goals for yourself upon turning a new age?

Notice, there’s not a list for my 41st year.

40 Things To Do While I’m 40

Posted on June 25, 2012 Written by Tonya

So, like many of you I have a Bucket List of very lofty, somewhat expensive and sort out there things I would like to do before I die, but in the meantime, I have 40 immediate goals to tackle over the next 12 months (seeing as I have sort of missed the boat on things to do BEFORE turning 40).

Actually, I am very happy with my life, the way I look and the items that fill our family calendar. Oh, sure, I wish I had my pre-pregnancy tummy back, fewer gray hairs on my head, and a lot more free time, but I’m really okay welcoming a new decade.

My 40 things, in no particular order:

  1. Watch all 550 minutes of The Planet Earth DVDs.
  2. Run at least four 5Ks. The first one is coming up on July 4!
  3. Sell my parents house in Arizona.
  4. Find a new house here, buy it and move in. Whew!
  5. If we aren’t going to move, finish decorating our living room.
  6. Raise a puppy. More on this later.
  7. Have a baby or at least get and stay pregnant by June, 2013. I am SO ready to get off this roller coaster.
  8. Read one book (at the very least) per month.
  9. Stop letting so many phone calls go directly to voice mail (are you reading this, Leah?).
  10. Successfully potty train my son. It’s time, yo!
  11. Finish writing my father’s story.
  12. Go easier on myself. In general. In all matters of my life.
  13. Resume my yoga practice.

  19. Schedule more one on one time with my sister.
  20. Take Lucas on the Radiator Springs Racers at Cars Land just as soon as he grows one inch taller. 🙂

  37. Volunteer in Lucas’ classroom.
  38. Leave the phone in the car and really BE in the moment.
  39. Spend more time outdoors.
  40. Stop making lists!

Happy birthday to me.

Look for updates!
