My Second Child

Posted on August 8, 2016 Written by Tonya

It’s true what they say about second children, they totally get the shaft. There’s fewer photos, less fanfare surrounding milestones, they tend to fend for themselves on occasion, enjoy the snot out of all the hand-me-downs and are inadvertently overlooked from time to time.

Take this blog for instance, I started writing Letters For Lucas shortly after Lucas, my first born was two months old. I wanted a place to record his every move and share my, what I thought at the time, were deep and profound thoughts on motherhood.

It was my first time and this was my online diary of what we were both experiencing, a baby book of sorts. Letters For Lucas literally started just as that, letters to my son. It eventually grew in many ways and has sadly now all but been abandoned. I treasure this space and wish I had more time to write. I often think about having the whole thing printed because I don’t want to lose these words, these memories, and I feel guilty not sharing letters, thoughts and wonderful happenings about Lola here.

My second child, my daughter, my precious sweet Lola. The child we longed and waited so patiently for. Lola brings so much joy to our lives and it is hard to believe that she just turned 2 1/2. She is a sassy girl and we love her to pieces.

Lola started preschool this summer. Eek! She goes three mornings a week to the same preschool Lucas attended and loves it and this morning was the first that she blew me kisses and waved goodbye instead of crying and pleading with me to stay.

She started taking ballet classes this summer too and and next to riding her scooter or big brother’s hand-me-down bike, it’s one of her favorite things to do.

Spunky and smart, Lola is the perfect combination of girly and sporty, which I adore. She loves books and playing with Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends, pushing one my old dolls around in a baby stroller and having bumper car remote control car races with Lucas all over our living room.

We are in the process of potty training and soon she will be in a “big girl” bed. Later this month she’ll be a flower girl in my sister’s wedding and you know I can’t wait to share those photos! Now, if I could just find her the perfect flower girl dress.

And will you please take a look at this little nut in goggles?!

Oh, my heart, my sweet Lola.

Childhood Classics

Posted on October 3, 2013 Written by Tonya

Play Doh, Crayola crayons, Hop Scotch, Dr. Seuss, Monopoly, Legos, the familiar jingle of ice cream trucks, cannon balls, balloon animals, Disneyland, peanut butter & jelly, hide and seek, cartoons and silly, albeit inappropriate songs…

I love how some things about childhood are timeless.

“Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat.
If you don’t, I don’t care, I’ll pull down your underwear.”

Lesson Plans

Posted on August 17, 2011 Written by Tonya

My son has already taught me so much in his short 26 months on earth; lessons I didn’t even realize I had learned until after the fact, some I desperately needed to learn and many I’m still struggling to embrace. I know my teacher has only just begun and there is much more wisdom to be gained, but in 26 months, here’s what I’ve learned so far:

  1. Play, dance, sing, run, eat – essentially, do everything with abandon!
  2. Find pleasure in the small things. There is wonder all around us, whether it’s an ant moving along the sidewalk, a water fountain, an orange tree, a song I’ve heard a hundred times or literally stopping to smell the roses.
  3. Playtime and imagination are necessary for survival. Laundry, dishes and errands can wait, being silly cannot.
  4. Love. As boundless as I think my love for Lucas is, it grows each and every day surprising and touching me in ways I never thought possible.
  5. Roll with the punches, go with the flow and realize that plans change. Toddler time is different that real time and that’s okay. I’m learning to plan accordingly.
  6. Laugh more. Some words and sounds (typically of the bodily function variety) are funny.
  7. Patience is most definitely a virtue. This is one of those teachings I struggle with. Daily!
  8. Connection is key. Sitting down and communicating with others helps to see things from a different perspective and lets you know they care.
  9. Time flies when you’re having fun. Toddlers are only toddlers for a short period of time and every single moment should be appreciated.
  10. Every now and then, a time-out is in order. Breaks are good. Counting to 10, breathing deeply and full bodied Cabernets aren’t bad either!

What is your child teaching you?

We Are All In This Together

Posted on June 1, 2010 Written by Tonya

In a national survey commissioned by Hallmark, it was revealed that two-thirds of moms say they handle the imperfect moments of motherhood by sharing funny stories with other moms about their experiences, and that 8 in 10 moms turn to each other for candid, empathetic, and unapologetic support and reassurance that “we are all in this together.”

Based on their research, Hallmark has developed an entire line of greeting cards called The Edge of Motherhood: Laughs For Proudly Imperfect Moms and I just spent almost an hour reading every last one and buying several.

All the cards are funny and very relatable, but these two are my favorite:

Inside: Hope you’re feeling perky today.

Inside: There, now… Feel better?

I bet you know someone who could use a little pick-me-up and besides, when was the last time you sent or received a greeting card? Show a fellow mom that you’ve “been there, done that” and know what they’re going through – and the best part, they start at just 99 cents!

The best is yet to be.

You Spin Me Right ‘Round

Posted on May 24, 2010 Written by Tonya

Not unlike most toddlers, you have a fascination with ceiling fans. You love them! Dare I say, you are a bit obsessed. It must be the rhythmic motion of the blades spinning round and round, or it could just be the breeze that they provide.

You love to point out fans everywhere we go and prefer for them to be moving. If they aren’t on, you stare and point at them until they are.

We only have one in our home, in my bedroom. It is on 24/7. We don’t have air conditioning in our house, so it is almost a necessity, especially with the summer months approaching. It is the first thing you notice when you enter our room.

This weekend, while I was away for two glorious nights on a girls spa getaway in San Luis Obispo, Daddy took you to The Home Depot to buy you a ceiling fan of your very own.

I think this photo says it all:
Installation is tomorrow.

The best is yet to be.

Mr. Friendly

Posted on May 15, 2010 Written by Tonya

When we go out to dinner, Lucas likes to hold court from his high chair by waving and smiling at everyone that passes our table. Waiters, beware!

It’s hard to believe and even harder to explain to an 11 month old that not everyone that comes in contact with him is a “baby person”. More often than not, people will stop and say hello, but if they don’t he is bound and determined to get a smile, at the very least.

I love it.

You are our little Mr. Friendly; warm, bubbly and generous. Nothing brings me more joy than people telling us how happy you are. I hope that these are qualities that you always possess.

You were in a particularly good mood last night and picked up dinner for your two doting parents, who are VERY much baby people. 🙂

The best is yet to be.

Lotions & Potions

Posted on May 13, 2010 Written by Tonya

We’ve been home over a week and I’m still trying to unpack and put things away and I don’t know why, but this made me giggle today…

Up until our last trip we shared my toiletry bag, but now that you have almost as much bathroom stuff as I do, you require your very own:

The contents are pretty funny too. Butt Paste really is the best diaper cream out there.

The best is yet to be.
