My Candidate

Posted on November 9, 2016 Written by Tonya

It is the day after the 2016 Presidential election and I am sad, shocked, confused, and very worried for our country.

I know I’m not alone.

The candidate I voted for, researched, supported, donated money to, believed in and admired did not win.

My candidate is tough as nails.

My candidate has withstood a constant barrage of hatred, vilification, smears, and mudslinging for 25 years. Republicans blame her for everything!

I was able to look past my candidate’s flaws and scandals. I saw a person who has spent much of her life fighting for causes that are important to me; family values, children, education and equality for ALL, especially women and minorities. She has been a champion for advancing equal opportunities for women and girls in America and around the globe, calling women’s empowerment “one of the great causes of my life.”.

This is who I want in the White House. Electing our first woman president would be an important step to ending gender inequality. And now that I am the mother of a daughter, this is imperative.

More than ever.

This country is so full of hate.

lolaforpresident

I still believe.

My candidate impressed me with her intellect, judgment, and compassion. We all know the mess she endured because of her husband’s infidelities. That was not her doing. She tried to protect her family as best she could and in the end, perhaps having her own political agenda and dreams of leading our nation from the Oval Office, stood by her man.

I took Lola with me yesterday when I went to vote bright and early and snapped a photo outside my polling location, an elementary school within walking distance of our home. Elated to finally see a woman’s name on the ballot, I proudly voted for my candidate with my daughter at my side.

I was not expecting to be emotional but I cried anyway.

I cried tears of joy because I thought we had come so far and not since Barack Obama have I cared this much about politics.

I voted for Obama in 2008 while pregnant with Lucas and rejoiced at his win while at a Madonna concert at Petco Park. That was a magical night.

Watching Decision 2016 unfold on NBC as polls closed across the country  I was thrilled to see the many blue states light up. I thought my candidate had it in the bag.

I was wrong.

So many of us were wrong.

Today I believe more than half of our country is made up of ignorant ass hats.

But I digress.

As I try to honor the outcome of the election and make sense of this America we live in, I will continue to teach my children, my sweet innocent children love, kindness and tolerance. I will teach them that ALL lives matter and to use their voice. Loud and often!

Donald Trump is going to be our president.

And as Secretary Hillary Clinton said this morning in her concession speech, “we owe him an open mind and the chance to lead”.

This is really happening.

And it will be interesting to say the very least.

——————————————————

The following is from The Huffington Post article, America Elected A Man Who Said ‘Grab Them By The P***y’ Over The First Female President:

Donald Trump openly bragged about using his celebrity status to sexually assault women. And multiple women accused him of actually doing so.

He said he was in favor of banning people from entering the United States based on their religion.

He believes that women he finds physically unattractive or overweight are lesser people.

He thinks that many Mexican immigrants are rapists.

He mocked people with disabilities.

He encouraged violence against protesters at his political rallies.

Close

Posted on July 2, 2014 Written by Tonya

I love my neighborhood; it’s quiet, safe, close to the freeway, airport, my husband’s work, Lucas’s school, numerous parks, the kid’s pediatrician, a library and countless other things we love to do. But my favorite thing about my neighborhood is that our house is only 1.50 miles from a major street that I can walk to with Lola in tow and complete errands!

Monday, I went to the bank, met a friend for lunch, bought Lola some teething tablets at Sprouts (a natural food store), Sharpies at Staples and Fourth of July goodies. Oh, and I got my Starbucks fix.

I love it when things are close.

Reflecting: One Last BlogHer ’11 Post

Posted on August 10, 2011 Written by Tonya

As BlogHer ’11 is still sinking in and I am reeling from all the new inspiration and sweet memories, I have to share one last post… the fun one, the evidence, the photos!
Photobucket
1. Let the games begin: arriving at the hotel Wednesday night in full blogger garb and new Uncommon custom iPhone case. Love!

2. My BlogHer experience would not have been complete without a photo with my blogging idol, Sherri of Old Tweener. Sigh! She is a beautiful person inside and out.

3. Flat Mandy of Mandyland enjoyed the Women Create Media workshop a little more than the rest of us.

4. Twitter twins, soul mates in many ways and my roommates for the weekend, the beautiful Natalie of Mommy of a Monster and Nichole of In These Small Moments.

5. Night 1: Gigi, Nichole, Lori, Natalie, me and Katie (my third roomie for the weekend).

6. Me, Sherri, Katie and Lori.

7. Another one of my favorite bloggers: the stunning Poppy of Funny Or Snot, who wasted no time staring at the enormous zit on my chin. Thanks for that!

8. Relax: My mantra for the weekend.

9. Every child’s fantasy; meeting Cookie Monster and Elmo.

10. How lucky was I to spend so much time with these lovely ladies?

11. Hearing Lori of In Pursuit Of It All read her glorious piece, The Red Underwear at the Voices of the Year ceremony was truly moving and a highlight of my weekend.

12. I was proud to wave (and wear) red panties!

13. Best. Night. Ever. I don’t get out and dance enough.

14. Yes, it’s true SurferWife is AMAZING is real life too and the Eyedews she was giving away like candy were the talk of BlogHer.

15. Katie of Slutier Nation and I had a little too much fun with mustaches.

16. A pre-screening of the movie, The Help courtesy of DreamWorks was a wonderful cherry on top of my weekend. I recommend this book to everyone and the movie did not disappoint. Plus, the theater was dark, quiet and cool and gave me a little time to reflect.

Determination Followed By Glee

Posted on June 29, 2011 Written by Tonya

Time after time, Lucas took each careful step up the ladders at the park, only to thoroughly enjoy the ride down the slides.

It was brilliant to watch.

Each of these shots was taken with the Hipstamatic app for iPhone, using Ina’s 1969 film and Jimmy lens, no flash.

Another recovered post from last week. Yay!

This little booger was up until after 10:00 last night!

Every Night

Posted on March 22, 2011 Written by Tonya

Every night I tell myself, as soon as Lucas goes to bed, I’m going to go too and every night, I stay up WAY past my bedtime.

This is my view at 11:15 PM.

And I wonder why I’m such a grump in the morning.

All Aboard

Posted on March 15, 2011 Written by Tonya

So much of my day consists of this…
… I line up Thomas and his friends, build train tracks, move trains along the tracks, rebuild train tracks, talk about trains, “feed” trains, sometimes watch trains on television, read about trains, wash and rewash train sippy cups, dishes and utensils, dig trains out of my purse, or shove them into it and try like hell to avoid breaking my neck by stepping on one of these guys.

This post is for Wordless Wednesdays and if you want to link up, or see some really beautiful photographs, please visit Alicia at A Beautiful Mess. This week, she is featuring a sweet thought on change.
