40 Days

Posted on November 28, 2011 Written by Tonya

I dread his birthday, our anniversary, Christmas, Father’s Day and every other occasion that requires a gift because my husband is IMPOSSIBLE to shop for. He buys everything he wants and he’s very picky.

There, I said it out loud and for all the world wide web to read.

Trust me, it’s nothing I haven’t already told him over and over and over again in the almost nine years we’ve been together.

Well, Todd is turning 40 on December 29th and I knew I had come up with something extra special, especially since his birthday falls so close to Christmas and he has always thought he’s gotten the short end of the birthday gift stick because of it.

To make this milestone birthday memorable, I decided for the 40 days leading up to his birthday I’d give him a small gift (Starbucks gift card, movie tickets, trivia cards from the year he was born, funny books, his favorite beer treats, lunch delivered to work, etc.) each day.

What was I thinking?! It’s not easy to come up with 40 gifts, but so far we’re on Day 10 and he’s enjoyed every one and I’m having a lot of fun too. Lucas has even gotten in on the action and “reads” the daily cards that hold a clue to what the day’s gift might be: “Dear Daddy, Happy Birthday. I love you.”

I need to finish big, so PLEASE send me any ideas you may have!

How much do I love that you got him that book?!? My mom got that for me for my birthday last year! You set the bar really high with 40 gifts.

What a fun idea. Good luck on finding the remaining 30 gifts.

Thanks. I probably have 30 gifts, it’s the last 10 days that are going to be challenging.

    Love this idea, it’s fabulous!!

My husband is also impossible to shop for, I totally have no ideas. I was thinking of a homemade coupon book – like: coupon valid for one neck massage, that sort of thing.

Oh, good idea! I really like that.

Look at you…what an amazing thing to do for your guy!!! I love this kind of celebration, one that reminds someone every single day how special they are to us…truly this is awesome. I can’t wait to see what else you pull out of your hat! What a lucky guy to have a phenomenal wife who makes everything special for him! Xo

Thanks for saying that, Kir. I think he feels pretty special, but when it comes to him and I, I’m the lucky one.

    Such a creative idea!

I’m horrible at coming up with things for my husband- he’s picky, too.

Thanks! Isn’t gift buying a nightmare. I seriously dread it. Sigh…

Oh, what a fun idea. (My husband is the same way. Picky and buys himself what he wants, grrrrr!)

This is silly, but it might be fun. Take Lucas to a dollar store and let him pick out 5 things. It will be silly and ridiculous and not really anything important, but it will be from Lucas, so priceless.

That’s a great idea! I’m totally going to do that. Thanks.

I love this idea. Someone already suggested it but I would try Pinterest for more little ideas. As for a big one? I will have to think about it, I’m not great at gift ideas.

Believe it or not, I haven’t even scoured Pinterest yet, but that’s only because my Pinterest is acting crazy. It hasn’t updated since Sunday. I’m having withdrawals.

Oh wow 40 days is a challenge – Jeez I am impressed you came up with 10. How about a coffee mug or travel cup with a pic of Lucus on it, lunch delivered to his office from takeout or made by his two favorite ppl. Hmmm I will think on it – what are his hobbies? Besides cars 🙂

I actually have 26 days worth of ideas, it’s the last two weeks I’m really struggling with.

      Thanks for the help. 🙂

Does he drink wine? you could give him an opener or wine glass on one of the days and then on another day take the glass and go on a surprise wine tasting trip for the day
I don’t know just thinkin… now I am wondering if I could be that creative – you are an awesome wife you know.

    • Tonya says

      November 29, 2011 at 7:43 pm

Great idea! Except that Todd is NOT a wine drinker. Beer only and I’ve already given him a 4-pack of his favorite… Keep ’em coming.

I’m certain you could pull this off too, no one can be as hard to shop for as my husband!

Thankfully my husband is a breeze to shop for, ok how about a day renting a segway and then lunch or dinner depending on the time of day. Could be a group of friends.

How about a mommy daddy only gift – he could unwrap you in something? a thought on the naked side of things

What a fun idea! I love that you’re making his b-day special and that it doesn’t get sucked up by Christmas. Hmmm…I like Alison’s homemade coupon book – I did that once for the hubs and he loved it. Gift card for a massage? Maybe for the finale gift a night away at a local hotel? Enjoy the rest of the days. 🙂

Just so you know, this is SOOOO something that Mom would have done. 😉 Such a cute idea and I’m sure he is enjoying it! Can’t wait to see what the final gift is on his actual birthday.

I know what I’d get a woman or wife or girlfriend but not a guy?
