Sunday Fun Day

Posted on August 15, 2010 Written by Tonya

I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack and Sons of the Desert had to be one of the most over played country cross over songs of 2000.

I listened to it again the other day and it struck me differently than it ever had. I don’t think I have heard since becoming a mother and it really is a perfect wish list for a child and the life they have.

I Hope You Dance
Mark D. Sanders and Tia Sillers

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty-handed

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances but they’re worth taking
Lovin’ might be a mistake but it’s worth making

Don’t let some hell-bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder)
I hope you dance
(Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

Dance
I hope you dance
(Dance)
I hope you dance
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder)
I hope you dance
(Where those years have gone)

Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder
(Dance)
Where those years have gone
(Dance)

What more could a mother ask for?

The best is yet to be.

That IS beautiful! I don't think I ever really 'listened' to the song before. I know the song, but I usually just sing along not 'hearing' the message behind the tune.

    Beautiful!

The Tim Mc Graw song, "My Little Girl" is another one that I enjoy. I know you have a son, but the idea that they don't stay little for long is universal. It always amazes me how fast they grow. I get all sentimental and teary thinking about it.
I'm glad we "met". Looking forward to reading more posts.

I've always loved this song. My college boyfriend's mother died while we were dating & this song was played during her memorial service. It gets me everytime.

But I'm a big mushball & cry during MANY songs.

You are exactly right. The writer's must be parents.

Great song and great text! Thanks for sharing! My favorite is "With arms wide open" by Creed – He wrote the song when he found out that he will be a Dad. Gets me all the time…

I always liked the song, but never even listened to the words…it is beautiful!

This song always makes me think of my children. Always.

It's just what I want for them, and what I'd want for myself, too.

They say the beauty in parenting is that we get to reparent ourselves at the same time.

    Lovely post.

Yeah I've always loved the words of this song but I'm really not a fan of LeeAnn Womack and just don't care for her voice much. I think someone else could have taken it further.
