The High Five

Posted on June 17, 2010 Written by Tonya

It’s High Five time again… a list of five products that I am loving right now and why.

1. Huggies Overnight Diapers
God only knows why, but we just started using these and all I have to say is: AWESOME!! On a good night Lucas sleeps 12 hours and these suckers are absorbent.

2. LAVANILA Pure Vanilla Perfume
If you love the smell of vanilla as much as I do, then you have to check out this fragrance. Plus, not only does it smell good, it’s good for you too:

From Sephora: LAVANILLA carefully infuses pure essential oils with 100 percent active botanicals for natural fragrances that are fresh, clean, and nurturing. With each spray, proprietary natural technology wraps the skin with super antioxidants goji berry and kakadu plum, soothing willowherb, and hydrating olive leaf for a healthy dose of 30 essential vitamins and minerals and 19 amino acids.

Now if I can just remember to spritz a little on each morning!

3. Trader Joe’s Light Kettle Corn
TJ’s is at it again. They seriously sell the best. snacks. ever. and like all the others this one doesn’t disappoint and I especially love that they are packaged in their own individual bags at just 110 calories a pop.

4. Lululemon Athletica
I live in these fantabulous yoga-inspired pants. They are a bit pricey, ($80-$110) but so so SO worth it. They are comfortable, reversible and keep their shape wash after wash after wash. The hidden pocket is a nice bonus and perfect for a key and a little cash.

5. Bubbles!
When was the last time you blew bubbles? Our nanny gave Lucas a bottle for his birthday and I forgot how delightful they are. It’s our new favorite thing to do at the park and in our back yard. Perfect summertime fun!

For past High Five posts, click here. Be sure to tune in tomorrow because I’m not going to be so nice.

The best is yet to be.

We Are All In This Together

Posted on June 1, 2010 Written by Tonya

In a national survey commissioned by Hallmark, it was revealed that two-thirds of moms say they handle the imperfect moments of motherhood by sharing funny stories with other moms about their experiences, and that 8 in 10 moms turn to each other for candid, empathetic, and unapologetic support and reassurance that “we are all in this together.”

Based on their research, Hallmark has developed an entire line of greeting cards called The Edge of Motherhood: Laughs For Proudly Imperfect Moms and I just spent almost an hour reading every last one and buying several.

All the cards are funny and very relatable, but these two are my favorite:

Inside: Hope you’re feeling perky today.

Inside: There, now… Feel better?

I bet you know someone who could use a little pick-me-up and besides, when was the last time you sent or received a greeting card? Show a fellow mom that you’ve “been there, done that” and know what they’re going through – and the best part, they start at just 99 cents!

High Chair Help!

Posted on May 15, 2010 Written by Tonya

We need a high chair!

Currently, we are using the fabulous Chicco 360 Rotating Hook On Chair and have it attached to our kitchen bar, but with as much as you enjoy dropping food on the floor and with all the yummy summer fruit soon to be available and warmer weather, I’d love to get you outside occasionally for meals. Not to mention my desire/fantasy to have a civilized family dinner around the actual dining table.

I still really like the Boon Flair high chair, but I’m also still not willing to fork over $230 for it.

Like with any of this baby crap, there are TOO MANY CHOICES and I need help!! I visited the Web site Wize, which reports on the best and worst products, but I’m sorry “It matches my kitchen perfectly!” is not a review.

Any suggestions out there?

The best is yet to be.

Lotions & Potions

Posted on May 13, 2010 Written by Tonya

We’ve been home over a week and I’m still trying to unpack and put things away and I don’t know why, but this made me giggle today…

Up until our last trip we shared my toiletry bag, but now that you have almost as much bathroom stuff as I do, you require your very own:

The contents are pretty funny too. Butt Paste really is the best diaper cream out there.

The High Five

Posted on March 30, 2010 Written by Tonya

From time to time, I’d like to share my High Five, a list of five products that I am loving right now and why.

DISCLAIMER: The High Five will sort of be a random list, but will contain five things that make my life as a mom a little easier, funner, brighter and happier. The High Five may or may not be baby related. Enjoy!

1. Yogurt Covered Pretzels
I felt like I had been living under a rock until I tried my first yogurt covered pretzel. In a word: delicious! I will never forget my first one; Fourth of July weekend just weeks after you were born. OMG! Greatest combination of sweet and salty ever.

2. Flip Video Camcorder
The easiest thing in the world to use and a perfect way to share special, funny and cute Lucas moments with family and friends near and far. I haven’t even begun to use this device to it’s fullest potential.

3. Cetaphil
According to the Web site: The #1 dermatologist and pediatrician recommended brand of skin cleansers and moisturizers specially formulated to provide effective, gentle skin care to help your skin look and feel its best.

All true and super inexpensive to boot!

I am forever on the quest to find face products that are light weight, nondrying, chocked with SPF and don’t smell like perfume. Cetaphil is it! In the two months that I have been using the facial cleanser, moisturizer with 50 SPF (the highest SPF of any facial moisturizer!!) and night cream, I noticed a change in my skin tone and texture. L-O-V-E these products!!

4. Sugar Free Red Bull
This fantastic pick-me-up has actually been banned in some countries because of health risks, including heart attack or stroke according to Australian medical researchers, but on nights when I want/need to stay up past 9:00, it is a must.

5. Fisher Price’s Laugh & Learn Learning Home
I have learned that nothing brings you more delight than sitting in vintage cars, being on the swings at the park, crawling and this fun toy in the waiting room at Cranial Technologies.

Your Mommy & Me friend, Brenna has one too and you spent almost the entire two hours we were at her house recently playing with it. I’m thinking we might have to get you your very own…

Innovations For Modern Parents

Posted on February 13, 2010 Written by Tonya

Now that you are eating solid food and enjoying three meals a day, I have found myself immersed in baby food feeding supplies and I am loving Boon products!

The Boon tag line is Innovations for Modern Parents. I don’t know that I would call myself a “modern” parent and I’m not particularly wild about modern design per say, but I do appreciate cool products with a creative edge and modern convenience.

Surprisingly, I found Boon products at my local grocery store. Not the usual place for innovative, sleek, modern baby goods.

The baby food dispensing spoon is one of the very best baby product discoveries I have come across. On-the-go, one-handed feeding….genius! I also love the sphere-shaped snack ball. Seriously, who comes up with this stuff?

After visiting the Boon Web site, I learned that they also make great toys, bath gear and organizational items. I am really digging their Flair highchair too, but not quite ready to pull the trigger on that yet (AKA fork over $230!).

The best is yet to be and I am liking the feeding phase. Never thought I’d say that!

Good Things

Posted on January 26, 2010 Written by Tonya

I was so excited to find these classic Fisher-Price toys at Target recently and couldn’t help myself by getting you my childhood favorites of the bunch; the Chatter Telephone and the Rock-a-Stack. The marketer in me loves the retro-style packaging too.

Do you remember these?

Target also sells the Sock Monkey, a Sock Monkey Jack in the Box, Lincoln Logs, Radio Flyer classic red wagons, Slinkies and Mr. (and Mrs.) Potato Heads.

Just goes to show you that you don’t need to mess with a good thing. Babies are babies…they respond to bright colors, love stacking, pulling, pushing and noise makers; and moms love toys that educate, encourage development and don’t cost a fortune.

Five Things That Make Me Smile

Posted on September 29, 2009 Written by Tonya

I haven’t been doing the mommy thing for very long, but I already have a few favorite products that have made our lives a little easier. I have even recommended a couple of these items to fellow new moms and they are pleased with them as well! By the way, I’m not getting paid for these endorsements.

Although we haven’t swaddled you in almost a month, I love Aden + Anais Swaddling Blankets. We received one as a gift before you born and I have since bought eight more! They are made from soft, breathable muslin fabric and have multiple uses…light cover at night, emergency burp cloth, stroller or car seat shield, tummy time mat, arm rest during feedings, etc., etc. I love them because they are so large (47 inches x 47 inches) and come in a variety of designs. We use at least one every day.I like to sleep in a plain white t-shirt and figured why wouldn’t you too. I got you plain white Carter’s Long Sleeve Bodysuits and they are perfect after a bath. They keep you cozy, but not too hot and because they’re white, they always look clean and fresh and I like to get them in a size bigger than you are for a roomier fit.Coined “the world’s first and only seat for babies who are not yet able to sit up on their own”, the Bumbo Baby Sitter, is super for helping to strengthen your baby neck muscles while providing you a little independence as you learn to sit up.Kiddopotamus Snuzzler Complete Head and Body Support, or as I like to call it, your bear skin rug. This ingenious design cradles you in any oversized carrier providing a comfier fit.Pricey, yes but oh so worth it, the BOB Revolution Jogging Stroller has super sturdy off road tires that are perfect for sand or street. It’s nimble and rides smooth and has lots of roomy compartments for bottles, (yours and mine) the garage door opener, phone and sunscreen and more Plus the see through sun canopy is a nice added bonus for your viewing pleasure.I’m off to find more cool baby gear!

Our Favorite Things: Sophie La Girafe

Posted on September 23, 2009 Written by Tonya

It looks like a dog toy. It feels like a dog toy. It even squeaks like a dog toy! But this is no dog toy… this is the perfect toy for teething babies! A big hit at our recent Mommy & Me group, Sophie the Giraffe has become your new favorite thing.

You haven’t shown much interest in toys up until this point, but this retro style rubber object is just the right size for your tiny mouth and hands. You are in the very early stages of teething and seem to really enjoy gnawing on it. I hope Sophie continues to be well-loved in our home.

This over priced (I paid $22.00) giraffe from France is your new favorite toy and her story (and benefits) are too cute not to share. I took the liberty of Americanizing the following from www.sophiegiraffeusa.com:

Sophie the Giraffe, who looks exactly the same then as she does today, went into production on Thursday, May 25, 1961, St. Sophie’s day.

A certain Monsieur Rampeau, an expert in transforming sap from the Hevea tree using the rotational molding of rubber as a toy-making concept, came up with the idea of designing a giraffe. Such an exotic wildlife figure would be a first on the market, and its size and shape would be ideal for a baby’s small hands to grasp.

Sophie was an immediate success when mothers saw that she helped soothe their children as soon as the first signs of teething appear. By simple word of mouth, the little giraffe’s fame spread.

Vulli, a company based in Rumilly in the Haute-Savoie region of France has continued to keep the jealously-guarded secret of how this wonder toy is made. In today’s fast paced world it is unusual to see a high production toy still “traditionally produced” and made by hand: Sophie requires more than 14 manual manufacturing steps.

Sophie the Giraffe is designed to stimulate each of baby’s senses:

SIGHT At the age of 3 months, a baby’s eyesight is still limited and he can only make out high contrasts. The dark and contrasting attention-catching spots all over Sophie’s body provide visual stimulation and she soon becomes a familiar and reassuring object for baby.

HEARING Sophie’s squeaker keeps baby amused and stimulates his hearing. To begin with, the funny sound Sophie makes when she is squeezed helps to stimulate baby’s hearing, and then later, helps him to understand the link between cause and effect.

TASTE Sophie is made of 100% natural rubber and food paint, and is completely safe to chew. Her soft texture and numerous chewable parts (ears, horns, legs), make her perfect for soothing baby’s sore gums during teething.

TOUCH Touch is the first means a baby has of communicating with the outside world. Sophie’s soft feel, like baby’s mother’s skin, stimulates physiological and emotional response that soothe baby and promote healthy growth and well-being. Sophie’s shape and 7 inch size are perfect for baby’s small hands. She is very light, and her long legs and neck are easy for baby to grip, even from his earliest days.

SMELL The singular scent of natural rubber from the Hevea tree makes Sophie the Giraffe very special and easy for your child to identify amid all his other toys.

More than 30 million Sophies have been sold and favorable reviews have appeared in Mother & Baby and Parenting magazines.

She is an undisputed star for babies everywhere. The archetypal embodiment of the early learning toy. Sophie the Giraffe is a must-have who enjoys widespread popularity and is genuinely loved by every parent and child.

We are definitely in love and it helped my buying decision process that one of my oldest and dearest friends is also named Sophie!

I Used To Carry A Designer Purse

Posted on September 20, 2009 Written by Tonya

Before becoming a mom, I used to carry a designer purse. My favorite designer purses are Coach purses and I have at least ten of them. I also have two beautiful Frederic T handbags from Paris, a gorgeous Kate Spade and Louis Vuitton that I paid way too much for, a knock off Chanel all the way from the streets of Bangkok and several trendy bags from Target, Old Navy and Nine West.

I love purses and back when I used to use one, I would switch them out depending on what I was wearing, the season, my mood, or what I needed to carry. I miss my purses. I miss the versatility and completion my purses add to my wardrobe and the ample amount of space they provide, allowing me to carry whatever I need.

Now, I carry a diaper bag….the very hip Skip Hop Dash Deluxe messenger-style diaper bag, as seen above, but I miss my purses.

There is a lot of room in our diaper bag for your essentials, but not a lot of room for mine. In other words, I had to (gulp) downsize. I used to be able to carry everything from band aids, safety pins and the current book I was reading to a note pad, Tide Stick and mirror. Sadly, those six items (along with all of my frequent shopper cards) were the first to go.

Now, I have a small corner in your bag for a clutch wallet that is busting at the seams with all the items I can’t leave home without…my bare necessities: money and credit cards, chap stick, hair tie, gum and phone. My, how times have changed.

I really do like our diaper bag and highly recommend it new moms. The new fall line of Coach bags is worth checking out too! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the leather Brooke bag and someday, I would love to own a legendary Hermès Kelly handbag, named after Grace Kelly, but for now I can live with the contents in my corner.

The best is yet to be.
