Pumpkin Patch Visits

Posted on October 24, 2010 Written by Tonya

We have been to the pumpkin patch twice this month, once with my Mommy & Me group and two days later with my sister, friend Colleen, her son, sister and niece.

The first visit was to Bates Nut Farm (the same place we went last year) and it was so hot that none of the toddlers were really up for picking or posing with pumpkins. Who could blame them? 102?! In October!

Lucas did get to ride his first pony, although he wasn’t that in to it. I’m blaming the heat. These were the only two decent photos out of 70 (!) that we got:

Two days later, it rained and was even chilly. Mother Nature, I’m not sure what you’re up to, but the cooler weather made for much happier photos, that’s for sure.

This time we went to the petting zoo first….

and then Lucas came face-to-face with his first scarecrow.

It’s hard enough to get one toddler to pose and smile for the camera and downright impossible to capture two. What you don’t see in this photo are four grown women jumping and dancing all around and making funny noises behind the lens.

Nothing worked, but it was a fun Fall outing anyway. Both trips.

Sumertime

Posted on June 21, 2010 Written by Tonya

Get your buckets, pails, sunscreen, wide brim hats and bathing suits ready, it is time to hit the beach, summertime is here!

We spent Father’s Day at the beach yesterday and Lucas had no fear of the sand, ocean or waves, so something tells me that we are going to be spending a lot of time there this summer and I for one can’t wait!
Today I am guest posting over at Mommy of a Monster and I’m talking about one of my favorite things on the planet (next to my adorable son and summertime) and that is of course, wine, glorious wine! Check it out.

Happy first day of summer, everyone!

The best is yet to be.

Father’s Day

Posted on June 20, 2010 Written by Tonya

Lucas has one of the very best fathers I know. Lucas is very lucky, although I think his daddy would say it’s the other way around.

In celebration of Father’s Day, here are some quotes that I think epitomizes the role of father and the relationship between a father and his children:

“It doesn’t matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was.” – Anne Sexton

“It is admirable for a man to take his son fishing, but there is a special place in heaven for the father who takes his daughter shopping.” – John Sinor

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” – Mark Twain

“Fatherhood is pretending the present you love the most is soap-on-a-rope.” – Bill Cosby

“The kind of man who thinks that helping with the dishes is beneath him will also think that helping with the baby is beneath him, and then he certainly is not going to be a very successful father.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

“One night a father overheard his son pray: Dear God, Make me the kind of man my Daddy is. Later that night, the Father prayed, Dear God, Make me the kind of man my son wants me to be.” – Anonymous

“He didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.” – Clarence Budington Kelland

“Old as she was, she still missed her daddy sometimes.” – Gloria Naylor

“Spread the diaper in the position of the diamond with you at bat. Then fold second base down to home and set the baby on the pitcher’s mound. Put first base and third together, bring up home plate and pin the three together. Of course, in case of rain, you gotta call the game and start all over again.” – Jimmy Piersal, on how to diaper a baby, 1968

“Small boys become big men through the influence of big men who care about small boys.” – Unknown

My personal favorite:

“The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.” – Henry Ward Beecher

Happy Father’s Day, everyone!

Memorial Day Weekend

Posted on May 31, 2010 Written by Tonya

We had a big, furry, delightful house guest for the weekend and no, I’m not talking about Elmo… thank God! Many words come to mind when I think of Elmo and ‘delightful’ isn’t one of them, but that’s another topic for another day.

No, our furry guest was a beautiful Weimaraner named Winston (I Might Secretly Be A Dog Person), my favorite dog on the planet.

Although the two of them have met before, Lucas and Winston are definitely still in the “getting to know you” phase of their relationship, as evidenced by these photos:

Winston wouldn’t hurt a fly and was very tolerant of Lucas’ poking and prodding. It was really fun to watch the two of them together and imagine what our lives might be like with a four-footed friend around permanently.

I spent the weekend calling Winston Lucas and Lucas Winston and it got a little chaotic at times, but Winston is such a joy to dog sit and in almost every way, a hell of a lot easier than a toddler!

Before I sign off, I am very excited to report that my blog has been reviewed on Blog Brew Review, a very cool blog dedicated to reviewing blogs. With so many blogs and so little time, this site is a wonderful time saver! Please check it our when you have the time.

A special thanks to Natalie (Mommy of a Monster (I Mean Toddler) and Infant Twins) for writing such a nice review. 🙂

And last but not least, to all the brave men and women, who serve our country, who have served our country, and those that have given their lives, and to all of their families, God Bless you… and thank you for fighting for our freedom. Happy Memorial Day to everyone!

The best is yet to be.

My First Mother’s Day

Posted on May 9, 2010 Written by Tonya

Today was my first Mother’s Day.

That still sounds weird.

I bought a card for my Mommy & Me friend, Jenn and it sums up this crazy ride very well:

The pay is short. The hours are long. It’s a 24/7 kind of job. Training is learn-as-you-go. Patience and wisdom required from day one. Retirement isn’t an option. Being a mom is a lifetime job and nobody does it better than you!

I love to bitch about my job, but I really do love it and today was especially perfect.

It started off with a nice long hot shower followed by scrambled eggs, waffles, crispy bacon and orange juice, and then a couple of much needed hours at the nail salon getting the full treatment while I read blissfully.

I haven’t even gotten to the perfect part yet…

Spending the afternoon with my two favorite men.

An early dinner at one of my favorite local bistros.

Not even 7:00 and we are all jammied up… my favorite time of the day!

Cocktail napkins from your dad… talk about perfect and he obviously reads the blog!!

I hope every Mother’s Day is just like today.

The best is yet to be.

Day 75/100

Mother’s Day

Posted on May 9, 2010 Written by Tonya

If it’s a weekday between 12:00 and 3:00 and I’m in my car, I’m undoubtedly listening to Dr. Laura. Love her or hate her, you can’t help but respect her.

Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s themes are protect the child, practice family unity, use sexual restraint, stop making excuses and don’t interrupt.

“Tell me what you think, not what you feel,” she says and ends every segment with “Now, go do the right thing”, a no nonsense plea cast out to her listeners intended to encourage us to be better people.

I don’t agree with everything she says, but just about and I love her no BS delivery.

Not only do I listen to Dr. Laura in the car, but I read her blog too and I swiped this quote and photo from there:

“She who forms the souls of the young is greater than any painter or sculptor.” – Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople C 347-407

I have known some wonderful mothers in my life, including my own and Mother Laura and I am proud and very humbled to be a part of this group and blessed to be your mom.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Hoppy Easter

Posted on April 1, 2010 Written by Tonya

Even though we don’t really celebrate Easter in the religious sense, when you are a bit older, we will decorate eggs and the Easter Bunny will hide them and leave you an Easter basket full of sweet treats and other goodies.

Today your aunt Leah and I took you to meet, said Bunny:

From our family to yours, Happy Easter!

The best is yet to be.

All You Need Is Love

Posted on February 14, 2010 Written by Tonya

As a celebration of your first eight months of life and a special Valentine’s gift for your dad, we made him a photo book using iPhoto.

I used to be a PC, but five months ago, the hard drive on my two-year old Dell went kaput and I have been getting used to Mac ever since. I love the Mac photo program. It is awesome and making this keepsake was a lot easier than I thought it would be. There are tons of color, layout and text options. If you are an Apple user, I highly recommend taking a look at it. You can make calendars, greeting cards and postcards too.

Here is our finished product:

Needless to say, he loved it!

As a side note, but still in the Valentine’s Day spirit, I subscribe to BabyCenter’s Baby Bulletin weekly e-mails and earlier last week I received one that made me smile that I want to share:

7 signs that your child loves you

  1. Your newborn stares into your eyes—he’s actually working hard to memorize your face. He doesn’t understand anything else about the world, but he knows you’re important.
  2. Your baby thinks about you even when you’re not around. Between 8 and 12 months old, he’ll start to scrunch his face and look around when you leave the room—and he’ll smile when you return.
  3. Your toddler throws wicked tantrums. Nope, those screaming fits don’t mean he’s stopped loving you. He wouldn’t be so hurt and angry if he didn’t trust you so deeply.
  4. Your toddler runs to you for comfort when he falls down or feels sad. Kids this age may not truly understand the meaning of “I love you,” but their actions speak louder than words.
  5. Your preschooler gives you a flower picked from the garden, a finger-painted heart, a sparkly rock, or another gift.
  6. Your preschooler wants your approval. He’ll start to be more cooperative around the house, and he’ll look for chances to impress. “Look at me!” will become a catchphrase.
  7. Your grade-schooler trusts you with secrets, like his first crush or his most embarrassing moment. You’re his confidante, even if he shies away from your hugs in public.

Who knew that a temper tantrum could be a sign of affection?

The article, How love blossoms between you and your child is worth a read too.

Happy lovers day, everyone!

The best is yet to be.
