Running Amok

Posted on February 23, 2011 Written by Tonya

When it comes to my home, I run a pretty tight ship and everything has it’s place; from my kitchen pantry and linen closet to my laundry room and everything in between. I like color coordinating and alphabetization. I thrive on cleanliness and organization. I am anal about order, putting stuff away, not leaving dishes in the sink, making the bed as soon as the last person gets up and there is no eating in my car, ever! I have a lot of stuff, but everything has a home.

Yes, all of this with a toddler.

Lucas has his own play area in our home in a room that is off from our kitchen. This is the ONE and only room of the house that I TRY to wait until the end of the day to pick up because it is his space, the place where we spend the most time together and I want him to be comfortable here and be able to make a mess and not worry about it.

Okay, when he is napping I do put everything back for Round 2.

I’m trying to teach him to “clean up” after he’s finished with one activity before moving on to the next. Let’s just say, we have a long road ahead of us…

Neither of us feel well today, so in between waiting for the bleepity bleep washing machine repair man to arrive (don’t you just love four hour windows?), watching WAY too much television and a pediatrician’s appointment, I sort of let Lucas run amok.

NOTE TO SELF #1: Disaster is bound to happen when you allow a toddler run amok.

First there was this, the mess in his bedroom, where I found dozens of puzzle pieces, books and stuffed animals strewn about and dresser drawers opened. I didn’t even know he could open them!

While I was cleaning up his bedroom, another mess was being created in a different part of the house:

Not quite the crime scene that Mommy of a Monster’s twins left her, but shocking to walk in on, nevertheless.

I’m just thankful that all pens still and their caps on. Apparently, he was after the car and/or the snack cup.

The best part is the “I didn’t do anything” look on his face.

By the way, yes, I do carry three packages of Kleenex. What’s it to ya?

Clearly, my purse isn’t quite as put together as my home.

NOTE TO SELF #2: NEVER leave purse on dining room table again!

This post is for Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop Prompt 2.) What did they get into now? Describe a time your toddler got into something they shouldn’t have.

For The Love Of Elmo

Posted on February 3, 2011 Written by Tonya

Today is a special day.

It’s Elmo Monster’s birthday!

Why I know this, is somewhat disturbing to me, but I guess it comes with the territory when you’re a mom. I’m blaming Twitter.

We are big Elmo fans in our home.

Well, one of us is.

With all of the Elmo merchandise we have purchased in the last year, I would hope that the adorable furry red monster is having a pretty terrific day. Assuming he gets royalties. As I type this, a certain little someone is enjoying Elmo’s World Happy Holidays for the 36th time. Yeah, I know it’s February 3, I just can’t bring myself to delete it.

Lucas has even dressed for the occasion.

Happy Birthday, Elmo! Thank you for making this little boy very happy.

Over 400 Miles To Go

Posted on December 27, 2010 Written by Tonya

Another lovely holiday with lots of goodies in tow,
We had over 400 miles to go.

You slept the first two hours full of bliss,
And then suddenly awakened, you were completely pissed.

We stopped for a break, new diaper and food,
Jammies, we thought surely would help achieve an improved attitude?

Then back in the car,
Mommy and Daddy became the ultimate rock stars!

Your expression was priceless and your face all aglow,
As a tiny TV came out of the roof and there appeared your favorite show!

Was it Thomas the Train that saved the day,
Or that nice Toyota dealer who said we couldn’t buy it any other way?

We made it home safe and sound, but the secret is out,
And I think it’s safe to say, car rides will never be the same for our little sprout.

My Son Has A Crush

Posted on November 26, 2010 Written by Tonya

My son likes Elmo, but LOVES Abby.

He enjoys watching her on Sesame Street, pointing her out in books, looking for her whenever we are out and about and toddles around saying Abby, Abby, Abby all the time. It truly is one of the cutest things ever.

He almost jumped right out of his skin when he saw her on the Sesame Street float during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

My sister recently got Lucas his very own Abby doll and the two have been inseparable ever since.

Seeing as my son has such a crush, I thought I should do a little background check on little Miss A.

According to Muppet Wikia, Abby Cadabby is a three-year-old fairy-in-training and made her debut in the first episode of Sesame Street’s 37th season.

Her name is a play on the magic word Abracadabra.

Abby’s magical powers are limited to popping in and out of thin air, floating when she’s happy, and turning things into pumpkins.

Although familiar with the world of fairy tales, Abby is astounded by such basic learning skills as drawing letters or counting, prompting her catchphrase “That’s so magic!”

She frequently uses her wand cell phone to call her mommy. When she’s asked to return home, she says that she’s “gotta poof.”

I gotta respect anyone that can turn things into pumpkins, but personally, I think it’s her bright pink color and adorable freckles. I don’t think I have to worry too much. I mean, really how far can a relationship with a Muppet go?

Hey, I Know That Girl!

Posted on November 22, 2010 Written by Tonya

Please visit my sister’s blog, LA ‘n’ LA for her story on how she ended up at Oprah’s Favorite Things Part 2 show.

One of Leah’s friends posted this photo, a freeze frame of her on the show that aired today. She looks pretty in pink, doesn’t she?

I am so jealous but very excited for Leah!!

Green With Envy

Posted on November 15, 2010 Written by Tonya

I’m dying.

My sister is on her way to Chicago to be an audience member on the Oprah Winfrey Show!!

Her roommate, Gina contacted the show and submitted a piece on the person she most admires and was selected to be on the show. I’m not sure if she’ll actually be on the show, but she was invited to be in the audience because it’s a topic that Oprah is covering on Tuesday, November 16.

Gina’s inspiration is her grandfather Lou, a World War II Army Veteran and the reason behind her Pin-Ups For Vets calendar project. The nostalgic 1940’s pin-up style calendars feature Gina and are sold to raise money for hospitalized Veterans, personally hand delivered by Gina to VA hospitals across the country and also sent overseas to our deployed troops.

Pin-Ups For Vets is a noble and worthwhile cause and Gina is fantastic at what she does.

Since moving to Los Angeles in January, my unemployed sister has been able to help Gina with her plight and because Gina’s dear grandfather has passed away, she generously invited Leah to accompany her to Chi-town.

Now you know why I’m dying!

What I wouldn’t give to be in Oprah’s audience… especially this year, her last season of the show. And, for the record, I’m also a bit miffed that Leah doesn’t even like Oprah. You read that right and I know what you’re thinking, “Who doesn’t like Oprah?!?!”. Nobody!

I have been a HUGE fan for 25 years and Leah has always given me @#$% for worshiping her, recording her show daily and subscribing to her magazine.

I’ve never been to a Oprah Winfrey Show taping, but have had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Winfrey speak twice and saw her every year at BookExpo when I worked for a book publisher.

So there!

While I may be a green-eyed monster, I do sincerely hope Gina’s project is featured on the show.

Have fun, girls. Oh, and if this turns out to be the “Favorite Things” episode, in which O shares (gives) products with her audience that she feels are noteworthy or that would make a great holiday gift, I fully expect first dibs on any and all swag you bring home. I would love an iPad. I’m just sayin’. 🙂

These Are My Confessions…

Posted on November 11, 2010 Written by Tonya

Here goes nothing… a list of all (some) of my weird, embarrassing, illegal and shameful activities. I am sure there are more where these came from, but let’s just start here.

Please don’t judge.

  • I steal magazines from my doctor’s office.
  • I let the gas in my car get dangerously low before I fuel up. We’re talking single digits.
  • I have had the same three Netflix movies for four months. What a waste of $68!
  • I color my hair and only wash it every three days.
  • I screen my phone calls.
  • I make our bed within minutes of getting up in the morning.
  • I miss working.
  • I want to rip a person’s arm off if they take food from my plate.
  • I listen to audio books when I walk.
  • I cheat at Scrabble, but rarely win.
  • I let Lucas watch too much TV.
  • I watch too much TV.
  • I record Oprah every day and I’ll cry when this season is over.
  • I have never read one single Harry Potter book, nor have I seen any of the movies.
  • I don’t like to eat leftovers.
  • I think there should be a ban on onions. I love the way they taste, but can’t stand the way they make my house smell.
  • I can’t get one hand wet without getting the other one wet too.
  • I can rarely listen to a song without singing along.
  • I can’t stand people that can’t show up on time.
  • I stole some erasers and gum from a convenience store when I was in the fifth grade and gold charms with my BFF Sophie when we were in junior high.
  • I use subtitles when I watch movies at home.
  • I drive over the speed limit and have been know to tail gate.
  • I’d rather send an e-mail than pick up the phone.
  • I once “borrowed” a scarf from a friend that I never returned.
  • I don’t like fish.
  • I still have thank you cards to send for gifts we received when Lucas was born.
  • I recently bought a Justin Beiber song on iTunes, of course, if you got your hands on my iPod, you’d think I was schizophrenic.
  • I floss my teeth (when I floss) before I brush them.

So, there you have it. Well, some of it. What dirty little secrets are your hiding?

Boy Crazy

Posted on November 4, 2010 Written by Tonya

I can’t remember when it happened to me exactly… the moment I realized I was boy crazy. It must have been sometime between fifth and sixth grade, but by junior high, I know I was a complete goner.

It happens to the best of us. We hit a phase in our lives where we just lose all control and find ourselves mad about the opposite sex (or same sex). Blame it on hormones, pressure to fit in, new found freedoms or boy bands, whatever the cause thank goodness it doesn’t last very long.

Between the ages of 11 and 17, it seemed I had a different crush every month. Whether it be a classmate, an upper classmate, my best friend’s boyfriend, my boyfriend’s best friend or the entire cast of The Outsiders. The more boyish charm, ultra cool swagger or bad behavior, the better. I also liked dark hair and dark eyes and The Outsiders had all of that and then some.

I have indirectly followed the whole cast’s careers over the years.

I respect Emilio Estavez for keeping his father’s surname, enjoy seeing Matt Dillon break away from the “troubled youth” roles, shed a tear when Patrick Swayze died last fall, would rather see a Tom Cruise action movie than a frou frou period piece and still swoon over Rob Lowe on Brothers & Sisters. I think my favorite of the bunch is Rob Lowe. That guy is still beautiful. Have you seen him lately? He does not age.

These days, I only have the time and wherewithal to be boy crazy for my husband and my son, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a couple celebrity crushes.

Let’s see: Matthew McConaughey – with his southern drawl, I could listen to him read the phone book, Clive Owen – a leading man I’d like gladly co-star with, Leonardo DiCaprio – a brilliant actor that is simply fascinating to watch, Bradley Cooper, (except for the fact that he’s linked to Renee Zellweger, whom I can’t stand!) Jake Gyllenhall, Josh Duhamel, and what list would be complete without Hollywood’s ultimate bachelor, George Clooney? I may have just cast a remake of The Outsiders with this list. Wouldn’t that be something? Although, I don’t know if I could handle it. Hmmm, and I thought my boy crazy phase ended at 17.

Who’s on your list?

Project Smile – October

Posted on October 31, 2010 Written by Tonya

October has become a notoriously bad month for me because it is the month my parents died three years ago and my plate right now is very full with lots of other stresses, but thanks to Alicia’s (A Beautiful Mess) Project Smile, here are 31 reasons I found to be happy this month:

1st – The kindness of strangers along the Susan G. Komen for the Cure route.
2nd – Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge. I got to cross #23 off my Buried List!
3rd – A celebratory dinner with Leah. We just walked 60 miles!!
4th – Home sweet home, coming home to Lucas. This was the longest I have ever been away from him.
5th – Pink toe nails.
6th – I made dinner!
7th – Blind (lunch) date with @surferwife.
8th – An impromptu overnight trip to Palm Springs.
9th – Coming home. Lucas didn’t fair very well in the hotel room, so none of us got any sleep.
10th – Watching Lucas’ face light up at all the trains at Travel Town in Griffith Park.
11th – Just a regular ole day where everything goes exactly according to plan.
12th – A great two-hour long workout! I love to sweat.
13th – After being in 102 degree heat at the pumpkin patch… air conditioner!
14th – A much overdue date night at one of my favorite restaurants.
15th – Five grown women making silly faces, funny noises and dancing around trying to get two toddlers to smile for pictures at the pumpkin patch and a champagne toast to two very special people.
16th – Finding a darling house with a nice big backyard and plenty of room to grow. Unfortunately, we had to let it go because we want our current house to sell first. But I know another one just like it or better is out there!
17th – Manicure, pedicure, lunch and shopping with a BFF.
18th – A jammy day! We played hookie from music class and spent the day in front of the TV.
19th – Leaving my therapist’s office after an eight month long hiatus and knowing that I’m going to be okay…eventually.
20th – Mommy & Me group mommies only get together. Where would I be without these women?
21st – I FINALLY got the oil changed in my car.
22nd – Finished one book and started and finished another!
23rd – A family bike ride. Lucas loves his helmet.
24th – We spent all day shopping for Lucas! He got new pants, shirts, shoes, bibs and a Thomas the Train set.
25th – A gift from a far away friend. Thank you, Sophie for the soap, it smells too pretty to use. xoxo
26th – A three hour long nap! Mommy was very productive today.
27th – Wine, wine and more wine with friends.
28th – Playing cars with Lucas. An entire hour flew by and I didn’t even realize it.
29th – Seeing Steeping Feet, a Dave Matthews Band tribute band.
30th – A husband who lets the mother of his child sleep in.
31st – My little Superman. And candy corn.

16 Months

Posted on October 26, 2010 Written by Tonya

Lucas will be 17 months old next week and I just realized I completely missed recording his 16 month milestones. Oops!

Lucas is becoming very VERY communicative and demonstrative and the boy has no fear.

He motors up and down the stairs on his feet, with the help of the handrail, scribbles with a crayon with abandon, has roughly 40 words in his vocabulary, of which “no”, “yes-y”, “choo choo” and “let’s go” are his favorites, he loves taking baths, climbing on furniture, reading books, hanging out at the park, eating apple sauce and is head over heels for this guy:this guy:and this guy, who overnight went from “Da Da” to “Daddy”.I love watching Lucas with his Daddy. Theirs is a very special relationship. My feelings on the other two guys, I’ll save for a later post.

Lucas is retaining so much it’s scary! I blogged about our visit to the pumpkin patch last week, where Lucas saw his first scarecrow and five days later, while we were in the supermarket, he started pointing and yelling “crow, crow, crow” and I looked up to see there was a scarecrow decoration on top of one of the aisles. He had only ever heard me use the word once a dozen times, how did he recall that?

Also, recently I was singing the Do-Re-Mi song from The Sound of Music and Lucas emphatically said “stop”, to which I replied, “oh, you don’t like that song?”, and he responded, “no”. I asked him if there was something in particular that he wanted me to sing instead in complete denial that it could possibly just be my voice. He looked at me sort of puzzled and then said “moon”. I started singing the moon song and he lit up like a Christmas tree. Stinker!

We are working on using sippy cups more, eating on our own without throwing our food on the floor or stabbing ourselves with a fork, independent play and having a regulated nap time. So far so good…. Next up will be the introduction of cow’s milk, more crafts and concentration on letters and colors.

Our little guy is growing up right before our eyes and it’s bittersweet to witness.
