With This Ring…

Posted on January 4, 2011 Written by Tonya

I’m a compulsive hand washer, so I’ve always had very dry hands.

My husband calls them ‘catcher’s mitts’.

When I was in junior high and bit my nails to the quick, I proclaimed to my mother that I would never hold a boy’s hand because mine were so ugly and gross. She made me write that down on a piece of paper and give it to her. As far as I know, she carried that note in her wallet for years until her purse was stolen. ๐Ÿ™

After I had Lucas, my hands became drier. If that is even possible. But, let’s face it, your body is NEVER the same after giving birth. It takes forever to fit back into your pre-pregnancy clothes and the hair loss and gain in the six months following delivery is, in a word: frightening.

In my case it seems pregnancy wreaked havoc on my skin too.

I had the worst adult acne for months and I still can’t wear my wedding rings with any regularity without this happening: My ring finger becomes a red, swollen, dry, cracked, itchy mess!

I then have to stop wearing my rings for a few days, let it heal and start all over again.

I have tried 1900 different types of lotions and NOTHING seems to help. Here are eight products currently in the rotation:Any suggestions?

Maybe a little sympathy?

My husband is getting a perturbed. Not because he wants to hold my hand, but because he’d like me to wear my wedding rings.

Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head

Posted on December 21, 2010 Written by Tonya

The day we moved into our new home, it was 80+ degrees and to keep Lucas occupied, we set up his water table in the backyard. He was in heaven! The spacious backyard was one of the main reasons we wanted this house. Sadly, it has done nothing but rain ever since move in day. As of yesterday, Southern California has received six inches of rain in four days and it is suppose to remain gloomy and wet through the rest of the week.

Lucas keeps looking out at the backyard, now a muddy mess, saying “park”. ๐Ÿ™

I suppose it could be worse, we could live on the east coast and be dealing with snow and freezing temperatures. Us Californians just aren’t used to being this wet.

Here’s to a sunny, or at least dry Christmas Day.

Pumpkin Patch Visits

Posted on October 24, 2010 Written by Tonya

We have been to the pumpkin patch twice this month, once with my Mommy & Me group and two days later with my sister, friend Colleen, her son, sister and niece.

The first visit was to Bates Nut Farm (the same place we went last year) and it was so hot that none of the toddlers were really up for picking or posing with pumpkins. Who could blame them? 102?! In October!

Lucas did get to ride his first pony, although he wasn’t that in to it. I’m blaming the heat. These were the only two decent photos out of 70 (!) that we got:

Two days later, it rained and was even chilly. Mother Nature, I’m not sure what you’re up to, but the cooler weather made for much happier photos, that’s for sure.

This time we went to the petting zoo first….

and then Lucas came face-to-face with his first scarecrow.

It’s hard enough to get one toddler to pose and smile for the camera and downright impossible to capture two. What you don’t see in this photo are four grown women jumping and dancing all around and making funny noises behind the lens.

Nothing worked, but it was a fun Fall outing anyway. Both trips.

Not Just Another Three Days

Posted on October 5, 2010 Written by Tonya

The 2010 Susan G. Komen San Francisco Bay Area 3-Day for the Cure began with an emotional Opening Ceremony on a foggy, windy morning at Cow Palace. From there we headed north into San Francisco and walked along the Great Highway with gorgeous ocean views. Some notable memories along the way included the โ€œManbulanceโ€ sweep van dancers, firemen out with their truck and the San Jose Bike Police supporting us along the route. The stairs on the steep coastal trail came up behind the Golden Gate Bridge as we walked through the Presidio to complete Day 1. After a long day of walking, we gathered at camp, our home away from home for the weekend.
We arose early on Saturday morning to another foggy day, ready to hit the trail. We walked across the Golden Gate Bridge (although we could barely see it through the fog). The Coast Guard came out at Fort Baker, with music, pink shirts, balloons and their dog. The sun came out for us in Sausalito as we headed up the coast for lunch. That evening, we gathered back at camp for a Candy Coburn concert.
We began our final day of walking in the rain, but the sun began to shine once we left the peaceful trails of the Presidio. We walked through Arguello Gate, into Golden Gate Park, passing the Conservatory of Flowers, the de Young Museum and the Japanese Tea Garden. Then we headed into downtown San Francisco to lunch at Mission Dolores Park with sweeping views of the city. Then it was into the Civic Center where the Oakland Fire Department had an impromptu dance party, and up into North Beach along Columbus Avenue. Our incredible journey ended with a celebratory Closing Ceremony at Marina Green.

A BIG HUGE GIGANTIC thank you to all my family and friends who donated to this amazing cause. Along with 1399 other walkers, you helped raise $3.7 million and I surpassed my personal goal by raising almost $2500! I also got to spend three memorable days doing something monumental to kick cancer’s ass in the process, along side my sister.

To read more about why I walk, please read my post Save The Ta-Tas.

While there are all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels on the course, walking 60 miles over the course of three days is not for the weak, in fact 50% of all participants don’t complete the full three days, so I am very proud of my sister and myself. We pushed ourselves to the limit and there were definitely many moments that I thought I couldn’t take one more step, but something…my inner stubbornness, my sister’s encouragement, an enthusiastic cheering station, or the cause itself kept me going and going and going.

Please visit Susan G. Komen for the Cure to find out more about this powerful event.

Cruel Summer

Posted on July 26, 2010 Written by Tonya

It’s summertime? You could have had me fooled. It’s already the END of July and I feel like I’m missing it completely.

We haven’t been outside nearly as much as I thought we would this season and haven’t done any of the other things I had planned in mind.

So far there has only been one trip to the beach and just a handful of visits to the park. The BBQs have been minimal and trips to the pool have only been for swim lessons. There haven’t been any baseball games, sundresses, Popsicles, rides on beach cruisers, strolls on the beach, boat rides, sunburns (which I’m actually grateful for) or lemonade.

The weather had a lot to to with it. It’s been unseasonably overcast, rainy and even chilly this summer in San Diego and while I’d rather be cold than hot any day, it’s just not summer without the sun…

…or a Dave Matthews Band concert!! 25 days until we are sitting at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre listening to my favorite band on the planet. I really do hope that it starts feeling like summer for me before August 20. I really need to get my act together or I’m going to regret it!

The best is yet to be.

Rainy Day Blues

Posted on January 18, 2010 Written by Tonya

“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” – Dolly Parton

Your dad left for Arizona this morning for an annual trip he takes to attend the Barrett-Jackson Car Auction and other events. He’ll return in six days. We are both going to be a little off while he is away. Luckily, your aunt will be visiting us for a couple of days, followed by your grandma.

It has been dark, windy and pouring rain all day long and unfortunately, it is suppose to be like this all week. Right now, the sky is the most beautiful shades of indigo and gray. We are safe and warm inside and very much loved.

The best is yet to be.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Posted on January 13, 2010 Written by Tonya

The sun finally peeked through the clouds enough for us to go for a walk earlier. I think the fresh air did us both some good. Unfortunately, somewhere between here and there, I lost my iPod Shuffle. I retraced my steps three times before I found it…destroyed on the side of the road! ๐Ÿ™ Oh well, it was nice spending time with you and hearing you happily jibber jabbering as we strolled.

I am still feeling horrible about our rough night and your tiny little infected ears and I’m sorry that I don’t always know exactly what you need when you need it, but I do know that I can illicit a smile from you whenever you hear me sing this song:

The best is yet to be.

A Not So Perfect Christmas

Posted on December 23, 2009 Written by Tonya

We have been in the Bay Area since Sunday and the weather outside is definitely frightful. You are battling your very first cold, which has presented some new challenges and frustrations but, nevertheless, it’s nice to be with family for the holiday. Your Aunt Leah arrived yesterday and your daddy this morning. Despite feeling crummy, your face lit up like a Christmas tree (pun intended) when you saw both of them.

Tonight we will celebrate your daddy’s 38th birthday a few days early by feasting on a spread from his favorite Mexican restaurant, Mecca with close friends that live in the area. I expect you to be overwhelmed and irritable all the while trying to also be your little charming self.

I haven’t heard too many Christmas carols this holiday season, but I love them and they make me think about what the perfect Christmas would be, if there was such a thing.

I love Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime”, the traditional “A Christmas Song”, “Sleigh Ride” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, but my favorite one’s is “My Grown Up Christmas List”. I love the Natalie Cole version, but many others have recorded it.

I know there’s no such thing as a perfect Christmas, but if there were, this list sums up my grown up wish list and my idea of a perfect Christmas.

My Grown Up Christmas List

Do you remember me
I sat upon your knee
I wrote to you
With childhood fantasies

Well, I’m all grown up now
And still need help somehow
I’m not a child
But my heart still can dream

So here’s my lifelong wish
My grown up Christmas list
Not for myself
But for a world in need

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal the heart
And everyone would have a friend

And right would always win
And love would never end
oh,
This is my grown up Christmas list

As children we believed
The grandest sight to see
Was something shiny
Wrapped beneath the tree

But heaven only knows
That packages and bows
Can never heal
A hurting human soul

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And everyone would have a friend

And right would always win
And love would never end
Oh, This is my grown up Christmas list

What is this illusion called the innocence of youth
Maybe only in our blind belief can we ever find the truth

No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end, oh

This is my grown up Christmas list
This is my only life long wish
This is my grown up Christmas list

The best is yet to be and I hope you feel better by Christmas morning.

Too Hot To Think

Posted on September 3, 2009 Written by Tonya

One of the many things I worried about before you were born is how I would know if you were too hot or too cold. Well, today, I think I got my answer.

A crackling heat wave has hit our fair state and the last few days have been almost unbearable. Every single window in our house is open, but the air is thick and still and I am sweating like a pig! It’s after 9:00 PM and still 81 in our bedroom.

Nevertheless, today was one of those days, even though miserable, all you wanted was to be held close and in 97 degree heat with a mommy that hates being hot and sticky, it is not a good combination. We were both irritable and if I had earned a dollar for every time I have said in the last 24 hours, “it’s so hot!”, I’d be a millionaire.

We went for a great (sweaty) walk in La Jolla before meeting your dad for lunch and felt a little breeze off the ocean, but not much. The most comfortable place to be the few days is in the car with the air conditioner on full blast, but you read yesterday’s entry….
