Under A Shady Tree

Posted on July 8, 2014 Written by Tonya

I had just completed my morning walk and as usual was anxious to move on to daily errands and checking items off my “to do” list, but something stopped me from unbuckling Lola from her stroller and buckling her into her car seat.

A shady tree.

It almost beckoned me, dared me to do something that was not on the agenda.

Come, stop, sit for a while.

There is nothing else you need to do right now.

Be here.

Carefully lifting Lola out of her stroller, I left it by the car, walked not even 5 feet, fanned out a blanket under the calm of the tree and sat down.

We practiced sitting and I sang You Are My Sunshine and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

We listened to the birds chirping and cars driving past, airplanes overhead and greeted anyone who walked by.

Lola grabbed at the grass with her tiny fingers and gasped and smiled with the wind.

Soon she had rolled almost entirely off the blanket and was gazing up at the leaves in the tree and “talking” quietly to herself. She was mesmerized, as was I.

As I stared in awe at my precious little girl, I thought I want to remember this. This moment.

She’s only going to be this small for a finite amount of time. I’m so glad we did this, thank you tree.

Duty will always call but taking time to savor and drink up these special moments is vital to my existence.

An Inherited Love

Posted on November 21, 2011 Written by Tonya

Home: the place where my husband and son are.

Both people bring so much comfort and joy to my life, but I am truly at my happiest in one of two other places; walking along the beach with the warm sun kissing my face, watching seagulls fly overhead, getting lost in my thoughts while at the same time completely clearing my mind. The salt air does wonders for my soul and the sound of the waves calm me.

My third favorite place to be, the place I find the most relaxing is a bookstore.

I miss the independent shops and the knowledgeable sales staff, the ones that actually read and can recommend something you’ve never heard of and fall completely in love with after the first chapter.

Books are magical; the way they feel and smell and line up against one another on shelves. I appreciate their ability to take our hand and transport us to another place and time.

Being in a bookstore is peaceful and I have spent hours walking up and down the aisles searching for inspiration, discovering it, exploring new topics, taking in the faint scent of print and coffee and relishing the quiet.

My love of bookstores, I inherited from my father. Sometimes he’d walk out of a one having spent hundreds of dollars and others, not one cent. The smile on his face was detectable either way.

This post was written for Write on Edge’s writing meme, RemembeRED. This week’s prompt: write about a (real) place that makes you feel peaceful. Where is your quiet place? What does it look like? What happens there? Word limit is 200. Constructive criticism is welcome.

Patience, Confidence, Remembrance & Sanctuary

Posted on September 28, 2011 Written by Tonya

Our back yard has lush green grass, a huge tree and bushes. The front yard has more grass, bushes and an orange tree. I have never actually tasted any of the oranges, but Lucas likes to collect the rotting ones that fall to the ground.

We buy all of our produce at the super market, albeit organic.

If given a plant in a pot, it would be dead within a month. I guarantee it.

For the past year I have purchased fresh flowers for our dining room table every other week. They range from bright cheerful sunflowers, my favorite flowers or crimson, pink or yellow roses, my birth month flower. Sometimes I’ll get Gerbera daisies or tulips because they both come in such a variety of colors, but I typically it’s a vase of sunflowers.

I have never given a lot of thought to the meaning behind flowers, until I saw this week’s Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop prompts. The first one grabbed me: What type of flowers would be in a bouquet that best describes you? and it not only spending a lot of time of the Teleflora Web site, but I am now also very interested in reading Vanessa Diffenbaugh’s book, The Language of Flowers.

A bouquet made up of the following flowers would best describe me:

Aster because it is a symbol of patience, something I desperately need more of!

Blue flowers (of any kind), because they symbolize trustworthiness, confidence, intelligence and unity, all characteristics I believe I possess. Blue is also my favorite color.

Statice because it is the flower of remembrance.

Queen Anne’s Lace because it fills out bouquets nicely and represents sanctuary. My sanctuary has always been my home, preferably in my jammies with a toddler afoot. All images and flower meanings are from telefora.com.

The Sweet Smell Of Spring

Posted on April 27, 2011 Written by Tonya

I wish I could grow flowers, tomatoes, basil, weeds, cactus… anything! I have the brownest thumb on the planet (I’m assuming that’s the opposite of having a green thumb).

As long as my husband and I have lived together he has always said that he’d like plants in our home. I discourage this every chance I get because I would either water them too much, too little or forget all together.

The only plants in our house are the flowers I purchase every two weeks: Pretty enough, but not the same, right?

I love walking around my neighborhood. I love to feel the cool breeze coming off the ocean not far away, the warm exchange of greetings with the people I pass and the sweet smell of spring, especially all the gorgeous roses in bloom!

I wish I could grow flowers like these:

There must be such satisfaction in having a beautiful vibrant rose garden.

Heck, any garden!

I need to send my husband out for a walk.

What can you grow?

This post was written for Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop, Prompt 4.) Photo Story: Take a walk through your neighborhood this week and share some pictures of what Spring looks like where you live.
