Let’s Here It For June!

Posted on June 1, 2015 Written by Tonya

I love turning the calendar on a new month, but especially June! June is full of happy.

Today is Charlie Pasta’s third birthday and from the moment I first held him, I knew he was meant to be ours. He drives me absolutely bananas 90 percent of the time, but he’s loyal and sweet, great with my children, my husband’s best friend and super cute, so our love/hate relationship will continue forever.

pupJune also marks the end of the school year and Lucas is just days from graduating from Kindergarten and turning six! His Golden Birthday is Saturday. I can’t believe either. As much as I enjoy starting a new month, I wish time could be paused.

Lucas has grown so much this school year! He has fallen deeper in love with books, insists on reading to us most nights, writes his own adventure stories, has discovered Skylanders, is an awesome big brother to Lola and has started exerting his opinion, space and will in a very big way.

Case and point:

door

The current sign on Lucas’s door.

I’m looking forward to a fun summer. O_o

To help alleviate some of the stress, my in-laws will be in town all summer, allowing them an opportunity to get to know the other half of the state better and spend quality time with their grandchildren. Yay!! We are grateful for their help.

Lastly, June is my birthday month! I’ll be 43 on June 26 and this morning my In Box was flooded with cool discounts and free stuff. If you didn’t know you could celebrate your special day all month long, read this post I wrote a couple of years ago: A Month Long Celebration. Free stuff is great and all, but I’m excited about a birthday weekend getaway with my husband. We haven’t decided where to yet, but there will be sun and cocktails and lounging by the pool!

It’s going to be quite the month!! What are you looking forward to in June?

Old School Blogging: I Am

Posted on May 22, 2015 Written by Tonya

I’m linking up with Elaine of The Miss Elaine-ous Life and Angela from Jumping With My Fingers Crossed for a little Old School Blogging and this month is a questionnaire of sorts.

Come play along! Copy and paste the words in bold below, write your post and link up.

I am still in my pajamas and it is (well) after noon.

I wonder if my body will forgive me for working out so hard yesterday.

I hear birds chirping, a leaf blower, cords from the blinds upstairs gently hitting the wall and our water cooler humming.

I see a flashing cursor and it reminds me how much I love writing and don’t do it enough.

I want someone to bring me lunch and help me dress like Olivia Pope.

I am currently obsessed with Scandal. I’m binge watching it for the first time from the beginning and don’t know why I never watched it before. It is a great show and a much needed escape for me at the end of the day.

I pretend everything is okay.

I feel most at ease by the sea.

sea

I touch my daughter’s hair a lot. It’s soft and silky like spun liquid gold.

I worry I’ll never have time to read all the books I’d like to, about dying and running out of gas on the freeway.

I cry every time I hear my son tell his little sister he loves her, for all the losses in my life and at Kleenex commercials.

I am trying my best to be more patient with myself and those around me.

I understand how important it is to be present, enjoy the here and now and let those you love know it!

I say no more than yes.

I dream of taking my children on an African safari, sipping a Kronenbourg with my husband at our favorite cafe in Paris, finding the perfect pair of jeans, clear skin (seriously, what is the deal with acne after 40?!) and being a gladiator.

I try to be a good human, loyal friend, great mom, loving wife and understanding sister.

I hope I am the mother my children need and to always be stronger than I think I am.

I am blessed.

The Woman In The Photo

Posted on May 9, 2015 Written by Tonya

She was a first time mother at the age of 23.

The year was 1972.

I can’t even imagine.

I became a mother at 36.

Not that I knew any more than she did. But the 13 years I waited to start a family I believe gave me a greater sense of self, not to mention over a decade more life experience.

Having a child changes everything, no mater what age you are.

I love this photo.

IMG_2678

There’s so much I wish I could ask this young woman. Deep mysteries and trivial information I would have loved for her to reveal to me.

Was she happy? Was she worried about being a good mother? Did she have close girlfriends to confide in? Was her mother helpful after I was born? How did she feel when her father held me for the first time? What made her feel special? What book was she reading? Where did she like to shop for clothes? What did she have breakfast? What was her favorite flower?

The questions are endless.

The look on her face in this photograph has always intrigued me. It’s equal parts exhaustion, bewilderment, adoration and indifference. Sums up motherhood pretty well, especially in those early newborn days. There is a lot going on behind those Mona Lisa eyes.

I’ve stared at this photograph for hours over the years and the longer I look at it, the more I see myself. Not 23 or 36 year old me, but me today.

I want to be a different mother to my children than my mother was to me, more open, more involved, a reflection of her best characteristics. Like she, I’m flawed in my own ways.

I learned many valuable lessons from my mother; the importance of sending thank you cards, how to celebrate holidays, the pure joy that can be found in a chocolate chip cookie and how to relax.

There are still so many questions for the women in the photo.

I miss her.

I miss a relationship I never had with her. I miss a relationship I could have had with her.

I think our relationship would have bloomed once I became a mother. I would have turned to her like I never was able to as a child.

Luckily, we all have two opportunities to have that mother/daughter bond. Once as a child when we have absolutely no control and again as mothers ourselves. If Mother’s Day is difficult for you too, please remember that.

If you have a difficult relationship with your mother, if your mother is gone, or you are struggling to became a mother, you are not alone.

Heart Sweater

Posted on April 30, 2015 Written by Tonya

At first sight I had to have it.

A darling navy blue sweater with a big red heart, sized for a 3-6 month old.

I didn’t have children yet, was no where near ready to have children, nor was I married, but something drew me to it.

It symbolized so much; marriage, family, everlasting love, my future. It represented everything that I wanted in life.

Had I not found it hanging in the back of Lucas’s closet last week, I would have been beside myself. He never wore it. I didn’t even try it on him. It’s as though somewhere deep within my soul, I knew it was meant for a daughter. My daughter.

Carefully I slipped it over Lola’s head and was surprised to find that it fit perfectly. She’s 15 months old today and my long legged little girl is already wearing clothes for an 18 month old or larger. Clearly it had been mis-tagged and I am so grateful.

I paired it with a pair of jeans because babies and jeans are the best and took a ton of photos.

Of course.

Thanks to our schizophrenic Southern California weather lately, it was a chilly day, but Lola was warm and cozy and so was my heart.

I have written about the heart sweater twice before. The most recent was in 2011 and can be found here: Hopes, Dreams & Wishes.

In The Moment

Posted on April 10, 2015 Written by Tonya

I’d be lost without local publications, such as Parenting OC.

This free magazine offers help for mothers of newborns, tots, preschoolers and teens. It contains award-winning articles with family wellness information, baby care tips, and OC school listings.

Their summer camp issue is one of my favorites and I also love their monthly calendar of things to do in and around Orange County and the In The Moment feature.

Especially this months…

PARENTINGOC

I submitted this photo in December and can’t believe it has finally been published. I am delighted! With a circulation of over 70,000, little Miss Lola is going to be everywhere.

Thank you to my friend, Shelby for the encouragement. Photography is something that I have always adored and hope to improve over time.

A Visit To The Easter Bunny

Posted on April 3, 2015 Written by Tonya

When Lola and I picked Lucas up from school yesterday I asked him if he would have his picture taken with his sister and the Easter Bunny and very much to my surprise, he said he would!

Proud of the fact that I didn’t have to put up a fight or that he asked for nothing in return (I have found that age five is all about the art of the negotiation), I told him after pictures I would take him to get an ice cream cone. He made an awful face and said no, so I offered him a trip to the cupcake store and again he said no. Starting to feel very confused, I said, “cookie?” and that was when he sheepishly asked if we could go to the bookstore and he could get a book instead of a treat explaining, “Because mom, an ice cream cone will be gone in like two seconds, but a book will last forever.”

Be still my book loving heart!

Also?

Who is this kid?

After both children were absolute rock stars waiting in the hot sun for nearly an hour to have their photo taken with a giant person stuffed into an Easter Bunny costume, Lucas got not one, but three new books!

And as if my son hadn’t impressed me enough already, one of the books he chose was a gift for his friend. I love the ways my children surprise and delight me.

Here’s our photo! It isn’t great, they both have goofy looks on their faces, but I love it. Lola is wearing a beautiful hand-me-down dress from her cousins, who are now 13 and 11 respectively.

Then vs. Now

Posted on March 24, 2015 Written by Tonya

It goes by so fast.

As a parent you hear this and think it over and over and over again.

It’s true.

And there is no pause button.

One minute my son is safely buckled in tight on the back of my husband’s bike in a helmet that barely fits him and the next he was way out ahead of me on his own. No training wheels, not a care in the world and I am calling after him to stop at the corner so I can catch up.

One day I am introducing Lucas to Play-Doh and trying to keep him from eating it and the next I am listening to him read and helping his complete book reports.

My tiny baby went from being rocked to sleep in my arms to sleeping soundly in a crib, then a toddler bed and before I knew it, he was in a full-size bed of his own.  sleep

It’s hard to believe my now 52 pound, 52 inch boy used to fit in the sink.

Lucas has been a water baby since birth but I hold my breath every single time he’s in a swimsuit.

20 Questions – Part 3

Posted on March 18, 2015 Written by Tonya

Lucas is the greatest big brother a girl could ask for, he’s smart, curious and is completely obsessed with Super Heroes, Lego and Star Wars at the moment and just started playing soccer.

He’s also cheeky, stubborn, a master negotiator, especially when it comes to screen time, and I often wonder if his ears are full of wax. He’s all boy and he’s owned my heart since the moment I found out I was pregnant with him.

I first asked Lucas these questions when he was 2 1/2 and planned to do it every year, but you know, life got in the way, so the next interview was when he turned 4 and now he’s almost 6! Eek.

I loved recording his responses.

1. What is your favorite color? Red

2. What is your favorite toy? Lego

3. What is your favorite fruit? Pineapple

4. What is your favorite TV show? Star Wars Rebels and The Voice

5. What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch? Pasta – we have recently learned the best way to take warm meals to school!

6. What is your favorite outfit? Swim suit

7. What is your favorite game? Junior Monopoly

8. What is your favorite snack? Cliff Crunch bars – chocolate chip

9. What is your favorite animal? Penguins and cats

10. What is your favorite song? Anything by Taylor Swift and Fireworks by Katy Perry

11. What is your favorite book? 5-Minute Marvel Stories

12. Who is your best friend? Aydin, Brayden, Kingston, Isadora, Katherine and Jackson

13. What is your favorite cereal? Fruit Loops (a weekend only treat)

14. What is your favorite thing to do outside? Play soccer

15. What is your favorite drink? Good 2 Grow V-blend Tropical Fruit Medley

16. What is your favorite holiday? Christmas

17. What do you like to take to bed with you at night? Lovey and mounds of books

18. What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast? Donuts!

19. What do you want for dinner on your birthday? Cake – Vanilla with vanilla frosting

20. What do you want to be when you grow up? A national video game player (a guy who knows how to play every video game in the world)

Being Lucas, he had a few questions he wanted to add:

21. What is your favorite movie? Clone Wars

22. What is your favorite subject at school? Science

23. What is your favorite thing to do with Mom? Jump on the trampoline

24. What is your favorite thing to do with Dad? Go on bike rides

25. What is your favorite thing to do with Lola? Jump on the trampoline

I love this exercise and how much Lucas’s tastes have both changed and stayed the same over the years.

Is there anything that you do with your child(ren) each year to show their growth? If so, I’d love to hear about it.

My past two interviews can be found here: 20 Questions (November 2011) and 20 Questions, 22 Months Later – Update (September 2013).

Questionnaire originally found on Pinterest.

The Waves Of Motherhood

Posted on March 17, 2015 Written by Tonya

One moment calm and quiet.

Still and serene.

The next vicious and cold.

Loud and puzzling.

We crash into one another like angry waves.

It is powerful, vast and engulfing, completely out of my control.

It can hurt, leave scars and feel like being hit by a Mack truck.

It pushes and pulls and we are tangled up in seaweed, gasping for air.

September, 2014 – La Jolla, California. Lola is 8 months old.

Then suddenly it is peaceful again.

Warm and inviting.

Effortlessly and harmoniously we float side by side.

We each breathe a sigh of relief and prepare for the next wave.

Motherhood is like the waves of the ocean, complicated and challenging but always beautiful and worth riding every wave.

10 Things To Smile About

Posted on March 9, 2015 Written by Tonya

It’s easy to focus on the negative and not so wonderful things going on in our lives but today I’m choosing to highlight the positive and a few things that make me happy!

10 Things To Smile About:

1. Lola started walking!

2. Hawaii. I went to Maui for five days in February with two of my girlfriends and we saw whales swam with turtles, enjoyed some decadent meals and soaked up the sun.

turtle2

3. Lucas has started playing AYSO soccer. His first game was Saturday and although they lost, they played well. Go Red Dragons!!

4. Lucas’s Kindergarten class has an elective book report to complete every night (including weekends) and he is one of only FIVE in his class of 19 to have reached 40 book reports so far this school year and was awarded by having a special pizza lunch with his teacher. This makes me deliriously happy!! I’m very proud of him and love that we share a love of books.

5. Speaking of reading… I’ve read five killer books this year. All of which I would highly recommend:

    1. Still Alice by Lisa Genova
    2. We Were Liars by E. Lochart
    3. Paper Towns by John Green
    4. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
    5. Before I Go to Sleep by S. J. Watson

6. Summer (it’ll be here before you know it!) camps have been selected and Lucas is registered!

7. Sister dates. Mine turned 31 on Saturday and we are celebrating tonight.

8. Fresh flowers. Such a small, inexpensive delight. Lucas helped me pick this bunch of tulips.

flowers

9. A full tank of gas, a stocked fridge and wine rack, a garage I can actually move around in, and no laundry to do (for the next five minutes).

10. These two! They keep me on my toes, challenge me and fill my days with love and joy.

What are you smiling about?
