Elf On The Shelf – NaBloPoMo

Posted on December 1, 2015 Written by Tonya

Before the Elf on the Shelf was available everywhere, including my grocery store, or you could buy clothes, accessories and pets for your Elf, I offered the tradition to Lucas.

He was 4 1/2 at the time and wanted no part of it. In fact, the idea scared the bejesus out of him.

The whole thing is kind of creepy.

Last year, he was ready; eager and enthusiastic to discover Frederic each and every morning.

So, I scoured Pinterest heeded the call and came up with 17 days (we were a week late to the party) worth of ideas.

Here are a few of my favorite:

elfreading

Reading holiday books to friends.

elfcamping

Camping, complete with VW van.

elfdolls

Hanging out with matryoshka dolls.

elfgames

Cheating at CandyLane.

elfipad

Watching a movie on the iPad.

Looking at these photos, I fear I may have set the bar too high. I’m not feeling too creative this year.

Are you doing the Elf on the Shelf  in your house? Have any ideas to share?

My Culinary Side – NaBloPoMo

Posted on November 12, 2015 Written by Tonya

My relationship with cooking took a long and winding road to get to the stage it is at today.

I never spent anytime in the kitchen growing up. My mother was culinary challenged too. She could bake, but never really taught me anything. I learned my own way around the kitchen through trial and many, many, many errors! I completely ruined a pot burning rice type of error.

I would still eat like I was in college, if it weren’t for my husband and children. Did you know that they want dinner every.single.night? It’s exhausting!

And cooking is hard.

greekburgers

Greek Turkey Burgers with Garlic and Dill Yogurt Sauce

I still have trouble cracking an egg without getting shell in the bowl.

Sigh.

There was a time when I would have said that I didn’t know the first thing about cooking and being in the kitchen was like Chinese torture.

That’s not the case any more.

quiche

Basic Quiche – No shells!

I also realized the difference between not liking to cook or not being comfortable with it and not liking to be a bad cook. There is a big difference. And it turns out, it’s much easier than I thought! It’s time consuming and frustrating, but I know how to make rice now.

beefandbroccoli

Beef & Broccoli

My husband and I don’t entertain a part from the occasional playdate or sleepover, for the children’s benefit. My in-laws visit every so often, as does my sister and her boyfriend and I’ll have a girlfriend or two over when my husband travels so I use these opportunities to stretch my culinary skills.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve actually been cooking for my family and they eat what I make.

Most of the time. The children are way pickier than my husband!

mustardsauce

Pork Chops with Rosemary Mustard Sauce

We’ve been in our house almost two years and have yet to have a housewarming party of any kind. We need to do that and I’d love to be able to say I prepared all the food served.

Sprinkled throughout this post are some dishes I’ve made this year that haven’t sucked.

My own concoction!

My own concoction! Sweet potatoes and kale, a little balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper.

The photos are mine and I found all the recipes on Pinterest. If you click on them, they’ll lead you to the original site.

I’m always looking for a new recipe to tackle and next on my list are crab cakes, humus, egg rolls and cinnamon rolls. Have a recipe to share?

20 Questions – Part 3

Posted on March 18, 2015 Written by Tonya

Lucas is the greatest big brother a girl could ask for, he’s smart, curious and is completely obsessed with Super Heroes, Lego and Star Wars at the moment and just started playing soccer.

He’s also cheeky, stubborn, a master negotiator, especially when it comes to screen time, and I often wonder if his ears are full of wax. He’s all boy and he’s owned my heart since the moment I found out I was pregnant with him.

I first asked Lucas these questions when he was 2 1/2 and planned to do it every year, but you know, life got in the way, so the next interview was when he turned 4 and now he’s almost 6! Eek.

I loved recording his responses.

1. What is your favorite color? Red

2. What is your favorite toy? Lego

3. What is your favorite fruit? Pineapple

4. What is your favorite TV show? Star Wars Rebels and The Voice

5. What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch? Pasta – we have recently learned the best way to take warm meals to school!

6. What is your favorite outfit? Swim suit

7. What is your favorite game? Junior Monopoly

8. What is your favorite snack? Cliff Crunch bars – chocolate chip

9. What is your favorite animal? Penguins and cats

10. What is your favorite song? Anything by Taylor Swift and Fireworks by Katy Perry

11. What is your favorite book? 5-Minute Marvel Stories

12. Who is your best friend? Aydin, Brayden, Kingston, Isadora, Katherine and Jackson

13. What is your favorite cereal? Fruit Loops (a weekend only treat)

14. What is your favorite thing to do outside? Play soccer

15. What is your favorite drink? Good 2 Grow V-blend Tropical Fruit Medley

16. What is your favorite holiday? Christmas

17. What do you like to take to bed with you at night? Lovey and mounds of books

18. What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast? Donuts!

19. What do you want for dinner on your birthday? Cake – Vanilla with vanilla frosting

20. What do you want to be when you grow up? A national video game player (a guy who knows how to play every video game in the world)

Being Lucas, he had a few questions he wanted to add:

21. What is your favorite movie? Clone Wars

22. What is your favorite subject at school? Science

23. What is your favorite thing to do with Mom? Jump on the trampoline

24. What is your favorite thing to do with Dad? Go on bike rides

25. What is your favorite thing to do with Lola? Jump on the trampoline

I love this exercise and how much Lucas’s tastes have both changed and stayed the same over the years.

Is there anything that you do with your child(ren) each year to show their growth? If so, I’d love to hear about it.

My past two interviews can be found here: 20 Questions (November 2011) and 20 Questions, 22 Months Later – Update (September 2013).

Questionnaire originally found on Pinterest.

A Parenting Lesson In Preparedness: Lucas Lost His First Tooth!

Posted on July 30, 2014 Written by Tonya

You know you’re a mom when on the rare occasion you go out of town, monumental things will happen at home.

Okay, so that’s a little dramatic, but Lola did officially start crawling over the weekend I was in San Jose at BlogHer 2014 (I’ll share a recap post on the conference in a few days).

And Todd sent me this photo of Lucas’s first loose tooth!

text So exciting.

I had visions of going to the bank for crisp $2 bills, carefully painting the bills with glitter glue and downloading a template for Tooth Fairy stationary. A visit from the Tooth Fairy is very special, especially when it’s your first one.

I was reassured by my fellow mom friends that it takes a few days for a loose tooth to come out so I wasn’t too worried about it coming out while I was away.

Well, it happened last night! After a long day at Super Hero summer camp, karate lessons and a fun dinner out with friends, it was very late when we got home, way after bedtime late.

Lucas had been saying in the car that is tooth felt “looser” so he rushed to show his dad as soon as we walked through the door. Todd only had to wiggle the tooth slightly and after four days of being loose, it came out!

Why does everything happen at bedtime?

While Todd bathed and fed Lola, Lucas and I wrote a letter to the Tooth Fairy, I snapped a couple of terrible photos and then read him two books because even though it was well after his bedtime, he can’t go to bed without a story. I was trying to keep calm and not think about all the rushing around I would soon be engaging.

tooth

Once Lucas was safely asleep, I was scouring Pinterest for ideas, drafting a letter from the Tooth Fairy, asking about the going rate for baby teeth on Twitter, dragging out the printer, painting a $10 bill with glitter, drying it with a hairdryer and destroying any evidence. All at 11:00 at night.

Oy, the lengths we go to, right?

Neither of us had a $5 bill and Todd actually offered to go out and make change but we decided that was where we draw the line.

My advice to parents of new five-year-olds about to lose teeth, get your shit together early. You can thank me later!

The Story Behind The Post

Posted on June 16, 2014 Written by Tonya

In case you haven’t noticed, I’m really into social media, I have a Facebook account, I tweet, share photos on Instagram and spend an exorbitant amount of time on Pinterest. I’m active and post a lot.

Two weeks ago, I was trying to get dressed, pack for a weekend out of town, and get to Lucas’s preschool by noon to pick him up early. Lola wasn’t interested in letting me do any of those things. You know how four-month olds can be. She wasn’t fussy and didn’t need anything in particular, she just seemed… bored.

After having fed her, changed her and played with her for a while, I laid her on my bed with her favorite gauzy blanket and a soft book that she enjoys chewing and as I stepped into the shower and looked over at her, I noticed that she was on her belly with an erect head watching the Today Show. I snapped a photo. I added a filter to the photo and instantly fell in love with it. I love the contrast of dark vs. light on our bed spread, I love that the TV is out of view but the remote is plainly in sight and I love how tiny she looks on our gigantic bed.

I posted this photo and status to Facebook:

Screen Shot 2014-06-06 at 1.59.14 PM tv
At dinner the following evening, my husband, an inactive Facebook user, admitted to not having read any of the comments left on the photo, had this to say to me: “I didn’t like the careless nature of your recent Facebook post.” He wasn’t trying to start an argument and went on to explain that he knew what I was going through that morning and we’ve all been there, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, but doesn’t see the “need to be proud of our bad choices.” In other words, only share the good stuff.

Huh?

First I was surprised that he’d even seen it and secondly I felt attacked by his comments and was quick to justify my decision both about why I posted the photo and my comment and my parenting skills. I wasn’t trying to be defiant or controversial and I certainly wasn’t looking for approval for my actions nor a discussion about what age children should be allowed to watch television, I know our daughter is too young. Plus, I’m only human and very flawed and I can share that and be okay with it.

After we went back and forth a bit and I was able to step down off my high horse, we had a very interesting discussion about social media and I’m still thinking about it two weeks later, in particular: why do we post what we post? Or more importantly, why do I post what I post?

I post because I’m crazy lucky, think my children are darling, I’m very proud of them, love the funny and insightful things Lucas says and believe others will too, feel like every now and then I take a half decent photo (like the one above) and I like to keep family and friends near and far up to date on my little family and our lives.

Sometimes, I’ll post something simply for that “me too” factor, which was definitely the case here because I knew other moms would identify. I love it when people empathize, sympathize, agree or disagree or teach me a different perspective.

I’m not special, just a stay-at-home mom doing the best I can, trying to balance two kids, find time for myself, my marriage and family and friends. I love to travel, read, exercise and dine out. Preferably with wine and interesting company. I believe my posts reflect all of the above.

I’ll never bitch about my kids or that summer is too long or count down the days until they go back to school or that they are driving me bat shit crazy, but you better believe they do. I don’t like downer posts or complaining, but I’m not above it. I’ll throw myself under the bus. I hate vaguebooking (an intentionally vague Facebook status update, that prompts friends to ask what’s going on, or is possibly a cry for help) and I will never push my politics or religion! Ever. I like posts to be light, funny and cute. I also don’t post things to get “likes” or “shares”, but they are certainly nice.

I post for me.

I might think twice now before posting something because of my husband’s comments, but I doubt it. Our conversation did make me think about the image I want to present to the world and I’m okay showing both the good and the bad. And although we might disagree with the nature of my status updates and/or photos I choose to share, we agree on one thing: we are proud of this life from any angle.

If you are active on social media, why do you post what you do? Do you think through the ramifications if any before posting something?

Two Heartbeats

Posted on January 17, 2014 Written by Tonya

Waking with a start at 1:18 AM, I am tangled up in sheets. I’m hot and breathless. I sigh heavily and then listen. The house is still. The bedroom window is cracked opened and I hear a car whiz down our street and the distant barking of a dog. Downstairs, I hear Charlie’s collar, but luckily he doesn’t respond to his canine cousin. I throw my legs over the side of the bed and my husband moans and asks if I’m okay. “Yep” is my only reply afraid to wake up too much.

I am up and need to pee.

I make my way to the bathroom in the dark, quickly wash my hands and find myself back in bed within minutes.

Finding a comfortable position is next to impossible so I toss and turn and try a few different pillow configurations but end up giving in and reaching for my phone on the nightstand. The illuminating light is too much so I quickly go into my Settings and turn it down.

I proceed to spend the next hour responding to text messages received the day before, cleaning up my e-mail In Box and playing 11 waiting Words With Friends games. I also check my calendar for the day ahead and get lost in daydreams of gorgeous decor, insightful quotes, scrumptious looking recipes and far away places on Pinterest. I contemplate heading to the couch in the playroom to read.

Suddenly I realize I am not alone. My husband is snoring rhythmically next to me, but there is someone else.

The middle of my body starts to slowly twitch and roll. I put my phone down and place both palms on my belly. It’s a wonderful and indescribable feeling. With less than two weeks left of this pregnancy, I know I will miss this feeling.

Soon my baby girl and I will no longer share heartbeats.

Things I Did While I Was 40 – Update

Posted on June 25, 2013 Written by Tonya

A year ago today, I shared a list of things I wanted to accomplish while I was 40. On the eve of my 41st birthday, I thought I would reflect and update.

The items that are crossed off I made happen with enthusiasm and I’m not going to beat myself up about the other stuff.

I’m a work in progress!

  1. Watch all 550 minutes of The Planet Earth DVDs.
  2. Run at least four 5Ks.
  3. Sell my parents house in Arizona. Yay!!
  4. Find a new house here, buy it and move in.
  5. If we aren’t going to move, finish decorating our living room.
  6. Raise a puppy. More on this later.
  7. Have a baby or at least get and stay pregnant by June, 2013. I am SO ready to get off this roller coaster.
  8. Read one book (at the very least) per month. Barely!
  9. Stop letting so many phone calls go directly to voice mail. I think I’m getting better at this.
  10. Successfully potty train my son. It’s time, yo!
  11. Finish writing my father’s story. You can read it here.
  12. Go easier on myself. In general. In all matters of my life. This is an ongoing struggle…
  13. Resume my yoga practice.
  14. Walk the 1000 steps in Laguna Beach. This morning!! Twice! With the dog.
  15. Purge my stuff. Meh.
  16. Have an epic garage sale. See above.
  17. Drink more champagne.
  18. Take Lucas to the beach by myself. Just once.
  19. Schedule more one on one time with my sister.
  20. Take Lucas on the Radiator Springs Racers at Cars Land just as soon as he grows one inch taller. 🙂
  21. Eat more salads than sandwiches. At home.
  22. Spend less time blogging, tweeting, status updating, pinning and playing games. For reals! Hanging my head in shame.
  23. If I have to be on Pinterest, start trying some of the shit I pin. I have a entire board dedicated to Pinterest projects I’ve tried!
  24. Meet more local bloggers in person.
  25. Make out with my husband more.
  26. Reach out to my family across the country more often.
  27. Lower expectations across the board.
  28. Cook more. I was on a roll for a while and then got lazy.
  29. Try new restaurants… Pizza Ortica, Chow, The Deck, Rooftop, etc.
  30. When eating out at the same old places, try something different on the menu for a change. I’m a creature of habit, what can I say?
  31. Never lie about my age.
  32. Give paddle boarding a whirl. I have been once and I am going again on my birthday!
  33. Go camping.
  34. Consider hiring a trainer.
  35. When moisturizing, never forget my neck!
  36. Mail medical insurance claims before my husband has a cow.
  37. Volunteer in Lucas’ classroom.
  38. Leave the phone in the car and really BE in the moment.
  39. Spend more time outdoors.
  40. Stop making lists! Not going to happen!!

Am I the only one that makes these kinds of crazy lists or do you too make goals for yourself upon turning a new age?

Notice, there’s not a list for my 41st year.

What Infertility Looks Like

Posted on May 23, 2013 Written by Tonya

I don’t know when or why I started taking photos of my infertility journey, but I suppose it’s because I take photos of everything and this has been an all consuming process for the last three years.

Also, I want to remember.

As strange as that sounds, I want to remember the hot tears, sharp needles, bruises that turn from black and blue to green and last for weeks upon weeks, waiting rooms filled with birth announcements, handfuls of pills and every single time I have wished on a shooting star, blew out a candle on a birthday cake or looked at the clock at 11:11.

Then again, how could I forget?

The only thing I know for sure, when it comes to my struggle is that it will all be worth it in the end.

If you ever wanted to know what infertility looks like, here you go:

If you’re new to Letters For Lucas and my story, I write an infertility column over at SheKnows and I’d love for you to read it and/or or share it with someone you know battling this disease. I also have a Pinterest board dedicated to Infertility.

Smoothie Love

Posted on May 1, 2013 Written by Tonya

I gave up my beloved Diet Coke and did a three day juice cleanse a couple of years ago and loved everything about it, but I’ve been in need of a refresher.

Enter: The Smoothie.

It all started with a pin I found on Pinterest (doesn’t everything?), which led me to a blog post, which led to my lusting after a Vitamix blender and ended with me rethinking the way I eat.

I have been making a ton of smoothies, in fact one a day the entire month of April and there is no end in sight. I had two today. I’m obsessed!

I’m no cook but after a month of smoothie recipes, both following them and getting creative, I can honestly say I know what I’m doing. I love how endless the options are, not to mention how delicious and nutritious smoothies are! Things that you would never think go together, like blueberries, kale and avocado, do!

Trust me.

Great for detoxing, as a meal replacement or as a way to get a lot more nutrients in your diet, smoothies are awesome.

My favorite, by far is something I call Strawberry Goodness:

1 cup oatmeal (I use Old Fashioned Quaker Oats)
1.5 cup almond milk (unsweetened)
1 huge handful of strawberries (fresh or frozen, I prefer fresh, but frozen will thicken your smoothie).
1 huge handful of spinach
1 tablespoon ground flax seed
1 teaspoon Stevia (optional)

Blend on high for about a minute and serve over ice or enjoy as is!

lovesmooth

Smoothie shown in photo did not include spinach and therefore turned a pretty pink hue, the spinach makes it gray-ish. Please do not let the color scare you, it’s still tastes super yummy!

Dear Pinterest

Posted on April 2, 2013 Written by Tonya

Kristen of The Preppy Girl in Pink is my guest today. Kristen is a wife, mother of two tween girls and a lover of fan of all things pink and preppy… oh, and now Pinterest.

Letters For You

Dear Pinterest,

I can still clearly remember the day that we first met. It was back in the day when you had to be invited to join. My friend, Jennifer, author of the blog Jennifer P. Williams, had sent me an invite after I read a post about how much fun she was having on it and I told her that I didn’t even know what it was. I logged on, set up an account, took a look around and logged off. I didn’t log back on for several months. It wasn’t that you didn’t make a great first impression. You actually blew me away with your beautiful sunsets, gourmet dinners, desserts that went way beyond a box cake and tub of frosting, crafts galore and quotes put together with such beautiful imagery. Oh, the quotes! You really know how to suck a person in with those quotes!

I have to say though, you also intimidated me. I have let my left brain rule so much of my life that all of what you showed me in our first meeting seemed absolutely unattainable. Besides being a stay at home mom of two that can’t just pack her bags and catch the next flight to the most recently pinned paradise, I saw crafts, foods, quotes that made my left brain immediately shout at my right brain, “YOU CAN’T DO ANY OF THIS STUFF! YOU’RE NOT CRAFTY!” So, I pinned one or two things every once in a blue moon and let my left brain run the show like it always has.

Then one day it happened… I was working on the first end of season party for the field hockey team that I coach and decided that I didn’t want it to just be chips thrown into bowls. I wanted it to be something special. So, I turned to you. After scrolling through photo after photo, I could feel my right brain stretching and yawning, trying to come to life.

I started out slowly like you do after not using any body part for a time but my right brain became very strong, very quickly. I was clicking on pins faster than the laundry piles up! I was jotting down notes. I was bookmarking and printing my favorite ideas. I went from using your ideas for one party to my everyday life.

Now when someone sees a craft/decor I’ve made or tastes something that I’ve cooked they ask me if I found it on Pinterest. It is a huge compliment but I can honestly answer no to most of it now. You have inspired my right brain to be creative and experimental and you have brought out a side of me that I never thought would exist.

I can’t thank you enough!

Kristen
